Firebombers @ Foxfield

Post by AndyBeau »

Hopefully this will be of interest to a few of you.

We (McG, Agdickie and I) popped into Foxfield, not too far from Palmdale, back in September on our way to LA from Las Vegas to hopefully catch some of the Firebombers operating there during the Summer. These guys were very very busy!

Very pleased to be able to catch some of these old workhorses. The sortie rate was incredible. Often about 20 mins away after takeoff and when they got back, another 10-20mins on the ground and they were away again.

Very enjoyable couple of hours watching them come and go.

very nice selection Andy, it loooks incredibly hot!!! Were you "on base" or shooting over the fence?

Absolutely superb!
Shame that, whilst we are reading this, another P2 operator in the States is chopping up perfectly servicable aircraft for scrap

It wasn't too bad Keith if I remember correctly, certainly not as hot as Vegas. It was incredibly windy though so had to resort to quite a fast shutter speed (1/320) to be able to get some shots that weren't ruined by camera shake.

The first shot was taken through the fence next to their ramp. There is a little museum next to where we were standing that had some interesting machines but since it was mid to late afternoon we wanted to concentrate on getting as many shots of the Neptunes while the sun was still up.

The next couple were taken in front of the cafe next to the GA area where we had a very nice lunch!

The rest were taken from the road that runs past the end of the airfield. The pilots were keeping them very low which kept us happy! (e.g shot 5! )

One thing that I was kicking myself about was they had a Cobra there too and he flew off in the opposite direction when we were at the end of the runway! Gutted not to get a shot of it.

T'was a good day was that.

Some more info - we had been in Las Vegas and were headed back to LA on the Monday for our flights home on the Tuesday. This was right in the middle of the wild fires that had been sweeping So-Cal in late August, early September. With this in mind we made some enquiries with some of the local LA spotters / photographers as to where would be good to get either the firebombers or fire helo's in action. Fox Field we decided was not too much of a detour on our route from Vegas to LA, so we ended up there.

I was in LA area in 2003 in October, I think it was the day after Edwards show, and had a choice of heading to LAX to check in to fly home or kill a couple of hours at Fox Field. Wildfires were burning around the area, and Fox was busy, DC4s, DC8s, P2s, OV10 and others too if I recall.
It was great to see them fire up those old engines, spewing out smoke as they started (this from a modern mil jet fan ! ) and the sound as they struggled to climb out.
Bad news for them was it was too windy for them to drop, so thet had to dump the retardant on the airfield when they returned which was great to video.
Then had to make a hasty getaway to LAX as the fires were threatening to cut of the road back to LA!!
I will see if I can dig out some shots and pop them on if anyone wants ?

Thanks again folks, glad to see that they were of interest. It is not everyday that you get to watch these wonderful machines!

Joe - I would be interested too in seeing what you got.
