Coventry Airbase (AA+CF) Picture Heavy

Postby Jack Goward on Sat 28 Aug 2010, 7:18 pm

Hi everyone. Had my first visit to Coventry Airbase today. This isn't the Midland Air Museum but a museum based around Air Atlantique (AA) and aircraft of the Classic Flight (CC). You get to the museum viar the main entrance to the airport. This museum is one of the best. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in aviation..... so that's all of you :P. The staff at the museum are absolutley fantastic and the museum grants (with permission!!!!!) access all areas as far as the aircraft are concerned. Today I got the chance to get up close and personal with the museums Shackleton, DC6 and their latest addition; Nimrod XV232. Found out that the museums Shackleton (WR963) is the only one in the world that can taxi under its own power. The Shackleton Preservation Trust are currently restoring WR963 to her former glory. This really is a special place! Hope you enjoy!!

If your in Coventry or near the area this museum is a must see. It's a fantastic little museum with plenty to see and my thanks go out to the volunteers and staff that keep the aircraft on their feet, or wheels in the most likly case  Hope you like the pictures and C&C welcome as always.

How close to the Midland Air Museum is Airbase? Was at Midland in April before all this was open and when I heard this was opening wondered how close to the Museum, this Museum/ Visitors Centre is? And is/ would it be possible to do both in the same day?

Yeah for sure its possible to achieve both of them in the same day. Click on the link below, it's the AIRBASE, Classic Flight website and displays a map of how to find us. If you follow Rowley Road, Midland Air Museum is just on the right. It's the East side of the base. Hope this is of help to you

Nice, have'nt seen the Howard 500 for years! Is she still airworthy?

The Shack is to be repainted all over white, which IMO isn't a good idea for an aeroplane left outside in our lovely climate; will begin to look shabby pretty quickly. Kudos for doing it though

Well not airworthy, but could fly. That was one of the most remarkable things about this museum. Nearly all of the aircraft, including the 500 are capable of flight. When you get to have a nose around inside the aircraft, the staff supervisor frequently says "everything is still live, so please don't touch any of the controls". So in a sense yes, it's airworthy

Indeed I do! What a machine!

Hard to believe it's lived a reclusive lifestyle at Exeter for the last 25 years! It's due to ferry across to the USA after overhaul. Been bought by someone over there who has a sister-ship.

It was outside for some engine tests. Once all the ground and air testing is done the 500 could be gone quite quickly. It will be decided if it can be flown across the pond before the bad wether sets in, or whether it is lodged here in the UK over winter and moved in the spring.

Jack........glad you enjoyed your visit and a nice range of pics.
