Hangar 5 & Others @ Duxford - *UPDATE 23Aug12*

Postby Pen Pusher on Sun 19 Aug 2012, 9:46 am

The clear out of Hangar 5/North has started to make room for the arrival of the 'large objects' from IWM London. The Mil 24 Hind is almost ready for containerisation and the Queen Mary Trailer/Sea Vampire has been moved down to Hangar 3 and parked between the Gannet and Buccaneer. The Amiot AAC.1 Toucan(Ju52/3M) is due to be moved outside in the next couple of weeks prior to its travels to pastures new. I believe the Morane-Saulnier M-50 Criquet(Fi.156 Storch) also has a new owner. The FMA Pucara has had its outer wings removed, which will be attached to the top of the stub wings while it's in temporary storage in another hangar. The CASA 2.111(He.111) has had the accumulated equipment from around it removed so that will probably be shuffled around as well. Once the Ambassador has moved onto the hangar base outside Wing Co Joe's, to have its wings installed, the Varsity will be moved out of Hangar 3 prior to its move to the Classic Air Force's new base at Newquay. The Tucano is based at Duxford over the weekend for a display it's taking part in at Ramsey, Cambs, on the Sunday.

It's also been moved opposite the Ju52 and placed alongside the He.111.

It's off down to IWM London once the refurbishment of the Atrium is completed so in residence for about another year or two I should think. Before that I believe it's going into 4 Hangar, along with the other Cold War jets, once the Varsity is moved out.

Are they repainting the Harrier in the two tone green?

Not as far as I know. Everything is masked off just to paint the bare metal replacement skins on the underside of the aircraft. This was the aircraft that had a brake/hydraulic fluid fire, I think it was, in America.

Are we likey to see any new additions at Duxford once the Varsity or anything else goes or moves - also is the Typhoon likely to move to one of the other Hangers?

For new additions see above. The Gr9 & Pucara are moving into the Varsity space and don't know about the Typhoon.

With the extraction of the Amiot AAC.1 Toucan/(Junkers Ju52/3M) from Hangar 5/North this morning, some interesting photo opportunities arose in the car park between the two hangars.

After a lot of pushing and pulling with a bit of chopping down, the Amiot AAC.1 Toucan/(Junkers Ju52/3M) is now parked air side up by the American Air Museum until a bit of remedial work has been completed and then it'll move for static in next the air show.

I was lucky to be shown around Duxford before it was open to the public (well before Concorde arrived!) and our "guide" was confident this aircraft would be kept, at least, in taxy-able condition.

I feel it's a shame to see it go.

I wonder what next will be decided doesn't fit in with the IWM "Collection Policy"

Those 'large objects' have been at Lambeth for a long time. Didn't know that they are going up to Duxford.

Alex

Moving to Duxford for conservation before moving back down to London in a couple of years following the refurbishment of the Atrium, the bit they are in now.

st24

The CASA(He111), Storch and Pucara were moved straight back inside. The Pucara will be moving, along with the Harrier Gr9 into the space vacated by the Vasity when it's moved out. Sometime this week, probably now actually, a couple of containers will be parked outside Hangar 5 and the Hind helicopter will be packed into them. Off to America I believe.
