10 minutes with an old Saab

10 minutes with an old Saab

I was lucky enough to have the sole flying Saab B17 performing in front of me this friday. Positioned on top of the Saab airfield control tower it turned out to be a magical event. The clouds stayed away for most of the time and the display was pleasing for a photographer with top sides, loooow altitude flying and.....diving/strafing attacks towards my position....

Gear about to retract, and the crew has locked on to the photographer.

This image is not that "spectacular" when it comes to action as some of the images below, or tightly cropped around the aircraft, but it´s humbling from a historical perspective. The fields visible here and the house in the background has "seen" every single aircraft that has been manufactured by Saab take off for the its maiden flight. That includes this very example, from the first years of world war II.

Image
Climbing above the tree line after beting up the runway. The roar of the Twin Wasp echoing back and forth in the forest.

Image
High speed, low altitude.....passengers better hold on.

Image
Slowly starting to pull up...leaving a lawn moving tractor and a tug pulling a Gripen in disarray.

Image
Now turning it´s attention towards the euphoric photographer I got some angles that was new for me....

Image
Take a look at the heat from the exhaust pipes, tthis is not low speed....but still low altitude.

Thanks for watching!

Lovely machine and beautiful photographs. It would be great to see it back at Flying Legends next month.

Thanks for the comments!

The airfield is Saab/Linköping airport on the eastern side of Linköping, Sweden (there is a an airfield on the western side too, Malmen, that housed last years air show for example).

There will not be any international displays this year due to several reasons, the major one being a leaky propeller that restricts the ferry flight distance.

Such a pretty aeroplane! Rather hope it visits the UK in the not too distant future.

Great captures. Are the "cricket pads" presumably used as airbrakes?
