Air War over Russia Flying Heritage Collection Fly Day

Post by PeteFenwick »

Was lucky enough to time a family holiday to the NW USA to coincide with the last of the years Fly Days at Paul Allen's magnificent Flying Heritage Collection; well worth a visit but the thought of 2 unique warbirds was a mouth watering thought. All the aircraft in the collection are flyable but several are so rare that they are not flown (the 2 seat FW190 for example). The Flydays are monthly over the summer and free and have 2/3 of the collection's aircraft flown and displayed with a introduction of the aircraft and the pilots before starting.

Anyway Steve Hinton (of Chino fame) flew the Focke-Wulf FW190 A-5 (only flying example of a genuine 190 albeit I believe with a non standard engine) and Ross Granley (ex Snowbirds) flew the Ilyushin IL-2 M3 Shturmovik (again the only flying example and even static ones are extremely rare)

I'm under the impression this is the only Fw-190 with a genuine BMW 801.

Either way, seeing both the Fw-190 & IL-2 in the air together is something very special.   (thanks for the photos.)

Love the IL-2 - never appreciated how large a wing area it has. Will have the put one of these shows on my list of things to do in the US.
