A small dedication to Mirage IIICZ "Black Widow"

A small dedication to Mirage IIICZ "Black Widow"

Mirage IIICZ "Black Widow", a former South African Air Force fighter has flown its last flight (a few years ago), and will be delivered by road to AFB Zwartkop in Pretoria, where it will join a collection of other Mirages on static display for the rest of its days.

This aircraft has been on the South African airshow circuit for quite some years after it was restored to flying condition by Glen Warden and his team at Air Force Base Hoedspruit.

As far as I know, the aircraft flew its final display in 2010 at its home base.

The unavailability of spares and finance has meant that the aircraft can no longer be kept in the air, and I think it is with great sadness that we have learned of this news.

I have therefor decided to post these images as a tribute to the aircraft and its pilot, ground crew and support people who have taken it upon themselves to showcase this fine piece of South African heritage to crowds all over the country.

Thank-you, Glen Warden for flying her with such elegance and power over the years. It has provided some of my sweetest memories in aviation. From the high speed fly-by's at Zwartkop, to the earth-shaking sonic boom and adrenaline pumping touch-and-go's at Virginia. I am sure this fighter has inspired many a young person to pursue a career in aviation.

Sad to hear that Gerard, unfortunately that's our fate, less and less flying.

A real pity since we have the weather and airspace,

But this is a nice set, even if its now relegated to memory only, makes it more precious........
