Mirage IV arrives at Elvington at last! More pictures added.

Post by ianf »

I'm not long back from a long day at the museum, so only a few quick edits for tonight. But after nearly 26 years of negotiations the IV has made it to Elvington :yahoo:

1. Turning off the road to the museum site.

Image

Both Lorries enter the site watched by the news media and one gatecrasher!
2.

I can't leave Lindy out she says hi to a fellow ex strategic Nuclear bomber.
3.

4.
New home at last.
It will take just over a week to reassemble and then a official unveil will happen not long after When I have dates I will let you know.

What a beauty always hoped to see one of these and now my dream will become a reality, well done YAM, it takes me back to when we at newark moved the Viggen though it took us a lot longer than a week to put it back together. I can't wait to see it

Excellent. A fine looking machine. Only ever seen one and that was in France, on the ground.

Thanks guys. As I said only a rushed few last night. Today some more for you.

Earlier in the day the logistics vehicles arrived with the jacks and specialised wing attachment equipment. They also brought the smaller bits of the aircraft.

1. Nose minus refuelling probe.

Image

2. The probe which is made of steel and quite heavy, so if you look carefully you will see how many holes there are for the amount of screws needed to fit to the nose!

3. The rear fuselage and jet exhausts.

4. Main undercarriage leg. They are as spindly as I remember them.

5. The wings

I got to look at the parts prior to the main aircraft arriving and can say they are in good shape with the internal wiring in place not cut. All pipes are blanked correctly so it looks well looked after. With failing light I got a quick look at the wings and fuselage they also looked in good nick.

The aircraft won't go on immediate display, as an unveil is planned. The details are not complete so I have no date, but it won't be to long, after all we have had to wait long so far a few more weeks won't harm it.

Superb. Quite a coup too. Must make the effort to go when it's on full display.

Ian, is it the museums outright now or a long term loan?

Russ as far as I am aware it now belongs to us. One of the reasons negotiation took so long is the Mirage is part of the SALT 2 agreement. so as you say quite a coup. Also if you want to visit us let me know in advance and I will show you our Lady. This year is looking to be a exciting one at the museum, with the things we have planned. The Mirage isn't the only big thing going on at the moment. Our live Buccaneer has just gone through a 15 month overall and now is back in running shape and it is also being restored by my friend and Lindy owner Andre, to it's original navy markings it wore whilst doing trails on the USS Lexington. It's nearly complete, there is an official unveil coming soon, so I can't really give you too much, but from this picture you can tell it is going to be a stunner!

I will check on it for you Russ and pm you when I know.
