Datanshan, September 2016

Surprised I didn't make a thread about these before! So, prior to my visit to the first (and, possibly, last) Wonsan Air Festival, we spent a day in Beijing at the justifiably famous Datanshan.

Everything they say is true. Sadly the famous tunnel was undergoing refurbishment so there was very little to get from it, especially with out a tripod. But otherwise...good lord, what a museum. Huge doesn't even describe it, it really is the size of the airfield. The highlight for me as a photographer was the storage area. An-2s, Il-2s and all sorts in various states, left there in pieces. Superb stuff. The difficulty was the constant and pervading haze that really got in the way for wide shots. You could easily spend 2 full days here and not see everything.

You could say that! That line of MiG-15s has 29 aircraft - I volunteer at the de Havilland Museum which doesn't even have 29 aircraft!

Remarkable stuff. Some really nice photography there too Sam.

I usually find airframes deteriorating outside quite depressing, but here they're fascinating.

Superb set Sam, the Be-6P is a Qing-6 as it's turboprop.
