BBMF Lancaster roll out at Duxford

At Duxford this afternoon the BBMF Lancaster was rolled out for some engine runs ( well 2 engines anyway ) . Great to see her nearing return to flight.

Great to see - I asked this question in the thread about RAF Hendon, but perhaps people who look at this might be able to provide some insight. I know that the Lanc is always painted in the colours of centurion Lancasters and I was wondering why she had never worn the colours of S-Sugar from Henson (R5868 from memory)

I've long thought that it would look spectacular to see 'S-Sugar' reborn and in the air again as portrayed by PA474, but I guess the fact that the real aircraft still exists to tell her own tale while so many others don't will always prevent it from happening. Plus the decision now to carry two separate identities might impact a future overall scheme, though opinion seems divided on the dual scheme idea so that may not be carried forwards.

Anyway for now, I think the Lanc looks better than it ever has; there's been a lot of Lancaster repainting going on of late, but they have easily come out tops with PA474!

Great to see. The paint colours look spot on.

Are you forbidden from photographing the left side? Looks like the nose art is uncovered in the shot rolling out of the hangar.

Spot on as they have used the original war time specifications for the paint rather than a tin of gloss black from B&Q.

About time. Hated the gloss finish.

I know this is gonna sound a crap comment, and I don't mean it to be, but I would love to see a warbird owner apply an 'in service' look. ie matt, dirty, oily etc etc :-)

She does look good. Apparently the war time matt black was not often the final finish, it was not uncommon for the matt black to be deliberately smeared all over with oily rags to give a finish known as "silksheen" a sort of period eggshell result. Quite what the actual advantages were, someone might inform us, but the effect, surprisingly, was a semi-gloss. Maybe not a coincidence, East Kirkby's codename was "Silksheen".
