Magnificent Monino

Whilst in Russia for MAKS we just had to visit the magnificent Monino museum, what a place, packed full of wonderful cold war machines, as with many museums photography can be a little tricky due to the exhibits being packed in, but heres a selection

1. A machine straight out of Thunderbirds

Fantastic! shame about the state of some of the aircraft, I would have thought Russia would have more pride in their unique aviation heritage. can you post some more pics, fascinating stuff!

And this thing has everything, rotors, wings, tail, jets, curtains, and two flightdecks, its like it was constructed from bits in the spares box

The helicopter is a Mil V-12 - still the worlds largest helicopter - using the engines, gearboxes and rotors from TWO Mil-6's.

Two were built (there's another one at the Mil plant in Lubertsy) and they were designed to transport ICBM's that had been transported to forward bases by the An-22 (also at Monino).

It flew successfully and still holds a number of records for helicopters - the Monino 'restoration' has been recently repainted in the wrong colours !!

It never entered production as the Soviets decided to disperse their ICBM's by train.

Here it is after a (correct) repaint in 2002....

Great photos BTW - I haven't been since 2013 - but I am glad that rumours of Monino being 'raped' of its aircraft have proved false.
