During the winter I was luck enough to visit ARCOs Stephenson Hangar twice to visit PA474 during her major stripdown.
Getting this close to her was an very special in itself but to also be one of the first to see her in her new colours was simply staggering, say she is in as good a condition as she's ever been and its so good to see her back in the skies & displaying again

Thanks to ARCO & the engineers they brought in to complete the work to keep her in the skies for many more years to come

Lovely set of images, and lucky you for getting such close access. Out of interest is there a story behind the ice cream cone images, amongst the bombs on the nose?

There is, dont quote me 100% but I think they refer to raids over Italy, I could be making it up though

Dom, you are quite correct. They do indeed signify operations over Italy.

Some nice shots there, Dom.
Pics of WW2 aircraft being worked on to modern standards in modern facilities do always make me have a sly smile knowing that, out of necessity, during the War on each base a group of lads had to keep these planes in the air every night with nothing more than a basic tool kit, a big hammer and a lot of elbow grease.

If only you got views like that from their stupid "Viewing Gallery"!
Re: PA474 Major service
Wonderful shots, the money involved in looking after PA474 must be staggering !
Re: PA474 Major service
To add to" speedbird269's" comments, a lot of that work by the ground crew would take place outside, winter or summer, day or night, ice or rain, and could be long and heavy work. Hands on engineering of the most heroic kind! not to lessen the skills of their modern counterparts, just a bit of history. Very interesting
