Duxford January Bimbles ~ *UPDATE 1~ 16Jan18*

Postby Pen Pusher on Fri 12 Jan 2018, 7:45 pm

Only went to Duxford today as it was the best day of the week weather wise. i.e. not raining. Down at ARCo the BBMF Chipmunk was out on the grass in its new colour scheme, a bit more day-glo to be added, for a compass swing. P-51D/Ferocious Frankie, which is now sold, went up for a handling and possibly its last flight as a Duxford resident and the ARCo Buchon was outside for an engine run in its new temporary Dunkirk film colour scheme and went flying later in the afternoon. Although it has been out for several engine runs now, this was the first time I had caught TFC's T.20 Sea Fury making a noise. My ears are still ringing. In the order taken and with wall to wall cloud, it was a very flat light for photographic conditions.

Hooray, the Bimbles are back!

Thanks Brian.

I often flew in that Chippie as a young Air Cadet at 3AEF, Filton in the late 60s and very early 70s.

Great colour scheme, and great to see the T20 running. Wouldn't be so noisy if it had it's proper engine : )

Pleasure flights anyone?

The Bimbles never went away. Just that whenever I did visit Duxford towards the end of last year nothing was happening so nothing to post.

I remember the days when January at Duxford were dead, nothing happening, yet here in the second week there is war bird flying. :yahoo:

Since found out the Buchon is off to Wanaka for a holiday.

I enjoy the bimbles too...often they tell me what I've heard but not seen out of the office window! (for yesterday's bimble, I didn't even hear any flying!)

I bimbled into Duxford today for the 1st time in ages and the Firefly is gone from hangar 2. Any idea where it is? I wondered if ARCo are doing some work on it

Is that the same Buchon that was painted in that unsightly scheme for Legends last year ?.

What a terrible waste of a fabulous 'stang....

Such a shame re: Ferocious Frankie. Am I right in thinking that we only have one UK based, airworthy P-51 now... The Shark? The sooner Miss Helen and Miss Velma get fixed the better...

Is the BBMF Chipmunk just having an airing or are they perhaps planning on using it (them) as part of the RAF100 this year? I know they're only normally used for pilot training and "occasional transportation of small spare parts" (which I love) but they are pretty iconic aircraft in their own right. These 2 examples have been in continuous (as far as I can tell) RAF service since 1952, which must, at 66 years, make them the longest serving RAF aircraft currently 'on the books' mustn't it?

Anyway, nice pics Brian, thanks for sharing

I remember the days when January at Duxford was dead. Nothing happened and the only warbird movements were when they were shuffled around in the hangars. Today there were three two-seat Spitfires flying, TFC's T.20 Sea Fury was out for another engine run and four Lynx Mk.9 helicopters of 657 Sqn AAC, flying as Valhalla formation, flew through Duxford on their round Britain farewell flight. I only had a 200mm zoom lens and they were in a loose formation at 500ft flying over the hard runway so didn't stand a chance of any decent photos. Oh and TFC were shuffling warbirds around their hangar. In the order taken.
