Wick and the Northern Isles

Wick and the Northern Isles

Postby wallace on Mon 18 Jun 2012, 7:08 am

A wee trip up to Orkney and Shetland with stops at the airports along the way.

Wick
Finally, I managed at long last to photograph an aircraft here. Not only did I get this Jetstream I also go a Cirrus SR22 on its delivery flight to Germany.
Shot through the glass inside the terminal building.

Kirkwall, Orkney first
Conditions were not very good for photography.
I managed after a long walk to get around to the far side of the airport.

This twin Comanche is based and caught me on the hop by landing on the cross runway.

A multiple exposure of a departing SAAB. If you look closely you can see the aircraft develop a yaw on rotation and its correction.

Off next on this SAAB 340 for the short flight to Sumburgh on the Shetland Isles. (Shot through the glass from inside the Sumburgh terminal.) We made an orbit over Fair isle and guess who did not have his camera handy?

Sumburgh is a huge airport, it's heyday came during the construction of the Sullom Voe oil terminal, now almost all of the stands are empty

Tingwall next, a small airport run by Shetlands Council for their inter island services. This islander was will depart to Fair isle in an hour's time.

Shetland can only be described as a bipolar island. the weather on the Saturday was perfect, blue skies for most of the day, Sunday was a different matter. The view down on the of the runways at Sumburgh, taken about two hours before our flight back to Kirkwall. A 45 kt wind and horizontal rain made for an interesting take off.

Oh, boy - nostalgia time for me. I spent many hours travelling to and from those Islands and several more on them, Orkney in particular. I haven't been to Sumburgh since the Wilness Terminal opened in the mid-80s, but I can remember watching its progress. Bipolar is an apt description and I can remember watching the stunning sea-bird life in cloudless skies one day and the next exactly as in your last picture. Nevertheless very happy days....

Are there many movements at Scatsta?

Brilliant set from a rather un-photographed area.

Interesting set. Scatsta should be pretty busy on weekdays from my understanding of the place with moves from the based S-92s and the regular Saab 2000 shuttles from Aberdeen.
Do you want the Aladeen news or the Aladeen news?

Sadly Wallace having spent six years on Shetland as rearcrew on the S-61 then the S-92 I think you wasted a lot of money unless you were doing something other than taking aircraft photo's. As TonyO said Scatsta is a Monday to Friday operation (unless the weather has been bad and then they will fly at weekends to catchup) and is busy. Tingwall is dead other than the two Islanders. We used to take casualties there until they built the helipad in Lerwick so it is no longer used by the SAR flight. Sumburgh really is hit or miss. I did get some rarities, Swedish Hercules, two ex Swedish Coastgaurd CASA 212's en route to Urugauy, Dutch Coastgaurd Dornier 228 to show a couple of examples. Personally I was glad to leave the place.

Kirkwall tends to get a lot of bizjets in during the summer months but again like Sumburgh it is very hit or miss. Unfortunately I think you missed. Just out of interest I assume you flew up with FlyMaybe. Expensive wasn't it!
