That's interesting to read, albeit rather disappointing and perhaps slightly surprising... .

 What nonsense. So a silver Red Bull P-38 is more accurate than (say) the IXT painted up to represent the only two seater flown by the RAF?!!

I agree, but it's their show I guess.

That being said, the P-38 is a rare bird... There are lots of Spitfires that "Look" right to that image the public has in there head.

MIss Velma though? and the T.20?

I, personally, find it nothing short of a disgrace (no pun intended) that the Grace Spitfire, given her history, never flies at Legends. I'd be most suprised if the reasons stated above were true, given we've had the Breitling wingwalkers and other incongruous acts at recent Legends shows.

Perhaps what constitutes a "Legend" is determined more by the organiser's own opinion and relationship with operators and owners, than the historical provenance of any given aircraft. Might this also explain some of the other notable warbird absentees year on year?

Oh bless. You were probably the only one not enjoying it then... Perhaps a golden Rolls Royce Dan'Omobile that elevates you over the crowd and then takes you into the naughty field with a Pimms and salmon luncheon would be more to your liking?....

Quite. Better make sure that's in an authentic Rolls-Royce-approved paint scheme though, eh?

Hmm, little old me moaning about the fact that a show I've paid to attend for many many years and that I enjoy immensely every time I go managed to get a very rare albeit (in my eyes) horrid finished warbird or you going on and on about the fact how poor it was 'cos you had to pay and stand with the riff raff, the innumerable near catastrophes, the lacklustre flying from the crowd side, the lack of decent top sides........

A much as I love The Grace Spitfire and its true wartime history and have huge respects for Carolyn Grace, I would personally rather see a European based Spitfire than her flying at Legends.
This admittedly is for selfish reasons, as I do not get the chance to get to shows outside of the UK and Legends is the only time I will get to see any warbirds from outside the UK in the flesh.

As to whatever colours and paint schemes said aircraft are wearing, a P-38 is a P-38 and should be enjoyed as such a rare sight no matter what. In the future you may well be looking with fondness at getting the chance to see a P-38 flying at all rather than what colour scheme it was in.

I look forward to the show and hope it will be a safe enjoyable one for all those who turn up to see it and for those who perform in the show.I aslso rather hope its engine sounds rather than moaning I hear on the crowdline

Was Dano talking about the same air show as the one he describes here.

In fairness though, the warbird interests are well served in the UK. Flying Legends does a sterling job of filling the skies with WWII heavy metal each year, as do several of the other Duxford shows.

Britain lacks a real classic jet airshow, and I'd sooner see one of these established, than going over the ground that Legends covers perfectly adequately.

F86,

Once again Dan has showed he is truly skilled in hypocrisy and contradiction when comes to posting on the internet. It's all very well hiding behind a computer screen and moaning (as well has contradicting yourself, as he does on a regular basis) but when it comes down to doing something constructive and productive he is nowhere to be found. A childish man who if doesn't get his own way or something he doesn't like appears he throws his toys out the pram and resorts to being spiteful as several people on this board will confirm.
I am sure this post will be deleted and seen as an 'attack' against him, What it is in reality is a sad truth of one of the many, no-mark keyboard warriors on this earth.

Nonsense.

My criticisms of Flying Legends were entirely valid. The squabbling for space on the crowdline makes for a dreadful experience, and I for one have no intention of paying £££ to then have to chain chairs to a fence, or sit there for hours on end before flying starts just to be in an adequate position for photography.

And UKAR's review of the show this year was entirely fair too.

Flying Legends attracts a superb lineup of warbirds - this is without doubt. The notable omissions year-in, year-out are curious though. Peter Teichman's excellent collection, Maurice Hammond's machines and indeed the Grace Spitfire.

There are ways of avoiding crowd jostling and 'chaining' seats to the fence line (I personally find this appalling) without getting annoyed about the situation, patience is always good in these circumstances. I'm sure your adventures with 'great unwashed' at last years show did you no harm, you most likely went unnoticed. UKAR is not a huge magazine, it throws up a lot of interesting debates and photography, which would not see else where but you, as a whole, are not press in any sense of the word and to be fair a lot of people who gain access to press passes are not press, is this right? it is open to debate.
Your review was pretty damning of the show Flying Legend's popularity as an airshow has always been high but is growing year in year out with several record breaking attendances in the last few years. Legends will to continue to grow and as younger fan base is now growing it will only help to secure the future of these aircraft and this show.
I have been going to Legends for over 14 years now and I have enjoyed every show but there is one other thing I enjoy and that's the company I have had over the years, I have met some great people and had some great fun and it always makes me look forward to the next Legends.
One thing I have learnt during my short time being an aviation enthusiast I have found there is a lot of politics in aviation, not only involved with aviation as one subject but photography and socially as well ad that's sad. Yes we all have different ideas and opinions and we all do stupid things occasionally but do we need to be spiteful and completely out of order about it? no we don't. Some people need to seriously grow up because one day all these wonderful aircraft will be gone. As one friend who I met at Legends once said, We are spoilt. These machines provide a dual role for us as spectators, 1. They are there to provide entertainment. 2. They act as a reminder. We should not forget this as it we often take these events for granted.

UKAR wasn't there as press in any sense of the word. Our reviews are written from the paying punter's perspective. The reviewer is always inside the airfield, with the crowd, having paid the admission fee. To review the airshow experience, without having HAD the experience of watching the show like every other paying customer goes against everything UKAR stands for.

Get your facts right. We paid and went in with everyone else.

I am aware YOU paid and went in just like everyone else, hence comment about the great unwashed. the fact of the matter is you proceeded to comment on those you did not feel merited press passes at the time in your review of the show when frankly it was not you or UKAR's place to comment.
The prices for the show are reasonable considering the price of aviation fuel, maintenance of the aircraft and admission to the museum. If you do not want to pay for the over priced junk food bring in a pack lunch, its easier and I bet you its healthier.

Why is it not our place to comment? Are we not allowed to have opinions? Should we all happy-clap Stephen Grey and the Legends team and not offer criticism on how they can improve their airshow?
