is this new? another flightline enclosure for the well healed? less space for the core customers?

http://www.fighter-collection.com/image ... 202012.pdf

I think they maybe missing a trick here. On the Friday, there is lots to see with many airframes already arrived and plenty of check flights etc. The corporate market are quite happy to entertain on weekdays so why not have a private/preview/exclusive day on the Friday ( with the public not around, they could offer guided tours, meet the pilots etc etc, similar to Goodwood having preview days) and free up Saturday and Sunday for the core customers? More income and more flightline for core punters?

There has always been corporate tents on that piece of grass between the tower and crash gate B . No new tent probably just new sponsor.

That's idea seems to have a great deal of merit, but I have no doubt here will be many reasons for not doing it!

I think Brian is right - a new sponsor for an old tent! But I don't follow your well-healed versus core customer comment. Out of the 30,000/40,000 visitors a few hundred will pay exorbitant prices for the marquees, so why not? If people want to spend large sums of money on what is on offer I cannot understand any objection to it. I met a family of Australians there a couple of years ago who had decided to do Duxford in style - it was the only show which fitted in with their itinerary - and they shelled out for the Gold Enclosure. They were happy, and the organisers were happy that they had happy visitors so Duxford joy alround!

sorry if it came over as bitter, its a classic supply and demand curve situation and I do not for one minute blame TFC for creaming off the top of the demand curve and get them to pay extra. My idea re Friday was actually saying that they could exploit this market even more by having an exclusive event/day rather than an exclusive marquee.

Exclusivity is a key USP when offering expereinces to the corp market. So a preview day wouild offer something new and enable more places to tbe sold the one margue but still have little impact on the main event. (they could bundle in meet the pilots, guided tour of the aircraft, flight in a rapide, top food, even a jet display as technically, it would not be legends) etc, they could charge a very decent price for that, and some companies would want a whole marquee) I think the sticking point would be IWM as, for it to be truely exclusive, they would have to close to the public and they make a big revenue on the Friday.

OK, another idea, if the museum closes at 5pm, what about an exclusive preview evening with a mini-legends sunset display, flightline walk, the glider pair with some fireworks on their wings etc, evening champagne reception, guided tours of the hangers etc etc. If they run with that idea, I want 2% commision

I really do think it is a good idea. And perhaps the anticipated IWM objection could be overcome by charging on the Marquee door or by production of a pre-paid ticket on the door. That would not inhibit the normal Friday visitor attendance and maybe there would be extra revenue for IWM anyway - they certainly charge for the show day stalls and marquees. Why not drop a note to TFC - after all they can only say no, but thanks, but perhaps there is the germ of an idea.......

The museum, a few years ago, tried to turn Legends Friday into an event day so they could charge more. We kicked up a stink about that and it didn't take place.

But that is not what is being proposed, except for the few hundred who would be involved. And the idea as suggested would not involve additional charges for anyone but those who paid for the "event".

Re: Flying Legends 2012

Its hard to offer an exclusive package when the museum is open. Many of the people in this market simply dont normally go to public events and just stick to exclusive garden party style things If they have paid £200 for an exclusive experience, it may be tainted by knowing that someone just to the left of the marque has paid normal admission price.

There is a whole series of exclusive summer events that most members of the public dont even know exist and sometimes I get a little peak. Last year, I managed to get an invite to Paul Getty's private cricket ground at Wormsley. I felt a little out of place (my passat looked out of place amongst the Aston Martins!). as all the people there know each other and just spoke about all the other events that they were planning to attend over the summer There is a whole "summer season" culture to be tapped into in terms of revenue. Goodwood was really exploited that market very well and I am surprised that Shuttleworth in particular have not focussed more on that market. If you can become a regular event "to be seen at" with "the in crowd", it is a money maker.

Well perhaps TFC has already considered something along those lines and rejected it for the reasons you mention, but I am quite sure they would not be averse to a suggestion - after all, as you have implied, the more their income the more chance we have of seeing more "SNAFUs"!!

Imagine chucking out of the museum several thousand photographers early on a Friday on a Legends weekend when they know there is going to be a mini Flying Legends for an exclusive few later on. Do you honestly think all those photographers are going to go home and not park up on the surrounding roads or invade the naughty field?. Cambridgeshire police would love that.

Re: Flying Legends 2012

Surely not "several thousand" of the Pen Pusher-type photographer. I would accept several hundred, certainly. I think the case rests, as has been mentioned, on the way these events are arranged and that the guests will want exclusivity and it is that which would legislate against the idea. But when the museum is closed, might be the logical answer.

I think we are trying to see the idea objectively as I would certainly not be one of the guests and neither perhaps would Mr Beardmore but you, understandably, see it from a very subjective viewpoint.

OK, Pen Pusher, turn the problem into an opportunity,

charge the several hundred (or thousand) photgraphers £5 a head extra for an exclusive sunset photography evening (advance tickets only so no cash handling on the day) up by the tank bank,(that would keep them off the streets or out of the naughty field )

the loos in the Land Warfare part are already there so low overhead, burger van already in place so just needs staffing, they park and leave by the airshow exit (so 2 or 3 security/traffic staff required), seperate from the main museum entrance which is reserved for Aston Martins etc,

(just need to watch the wind direction as the Aston Martin crowd do not want the wiff of donkey burgers spoiling their pan fried trout  )

bobs your uncle

Maybe TFC feel like they have worked hard as it is and wouldn't want that extra workload the evening before a big two day show, just a thought.

I would have to agree, as a humble engineer the workload we have on the Friday before legends is very high, with aircraft movements, practice displays and arrivals often going on well after hours.

Add to that any snags we have to fix on the aircraft before the saturday show, putting ten plus aircraft away and the fact we have to be back at the airfield for before 6am the next day to start again really does make this idea a non starter.

It is a lovely idea but i think that is all it ever will be.
