FAMOUS FIGHTERS FLOCK TO DUXFORD FOR THIS WEEKEND'S ANNIVERSARY AIR SHOW
Up to ten examples of the famous wartime fighter the Supermarine Spitfire will be flying at Duxford's Anniversary Air Show this weekend, 6-7 September. The event, taking place at Imperial War Museum Duxford, near Cambridge, will celebrate the famous airfield's 90th birthday and its remarkable history. Seventy years ago in the summer of 1938, when Duxford was an RAF base, the airfield became the first to operate the now legendary Spitfire fighter. Within two years, Spitfires from Duxford and other British airfields were battling the German air force and helped to avert a German invasion in 1940. Nearly forty aircraft, including the Spitfires, are expected to take to air each day to mark Duxford's anniversary.
Duxford, one of Britain's earliest military airfields, is now part of the Imperial War Museum and is a multi-award winning, internationally-renowned museum. Visitors to the show - Saturday and Sunday - will be treated to over three hours of thrilling world-class flying. As well as the Spitfires, other Duxford veterans taking part include the Hurricane, Hunter, Meteor and Mustang. A breath-taking glider display, the Red Devils parachute team (Sunday only) and aerobatics team will add to the aerial spectacle. IWM Duxford is also delighted to welcome Avro Vulcan XH558, visiting Duxford for the first time and expected to put on a truly impressive display.
"Duxford was the first Royal Air Force Spitfire base and is today home to more airworthy Spitfires than anywhere else in the world." says Richard Ashton, Director, IWM Duxford. "The Spitfire was a revolutionary aircraft for the RAF. It went on to help stop a planned invasion and played a key part in winning the Second World War. The aircraft has a special place in the hearts of the British public and, as home of the Spitfire, Duxford is proud to have so many examples of the classic fighter taking to the air this weekend. Our world-famous collections and exhibitions will be on show and open throughout the air show as will the new AirSpace exhibition that was recently voted Best Education Project in the 2008 National Lottery awards. With so much history in the air and on the ground, this weekend's show will have something for everyone and will be a great value family day out."

19 Sqn is bringing a hawk along on Static so i would guess it is the special painted one (208 Sqn are doing the display so it wont be a backup).Wouldnt it make more sense to fly the special with the Spitfires than leave it on the ground?
