Museums worth visiting on way to Flying Legends?

Post by digitalsafari »

Hi all,

Driving up to Duxford from darkest Devon on Friday 11th July and looking for suggestions for an aviation/military museum to visit on the way (M5/M4/M25/M11), Flying Legends on the 12th then RIAT on the 13th.

The de Havilland Museum would be perfect but looks like it's closed on Fridays.

Museum of Berkshire Aviation in Reading is only open on Sundays.

Currently a return visit to the RAF Museum Hendon is looking the most likely.

Have visited the following: RAF Museum Hendon , Bletchley Park, Farnborough Air Sciences Trust,Helicopter Museum Weston Super Mare, Fleet Air Arm Museum Yeovilton, Brooklands, Farnborough Air Sciences Trust.

Any suggestions appreciated.

The only one missing is the Boscombe Down collection at Old Sarum airfield. Not the biggest but interesting none the less.Mainly cockpits, but has a drone meteor.

Thanks great suggestion, while looking at Boscombe Down found another on the A303/M3 route, the Museum of Army flying at Middle Wallop (http://www.armyflying.com/).

Looking at visiting both.

Museum of Army Flying is definately worth a visit, and as its not that far (although it would then make sense to go the other way round the M25 up through Dartford) you could drop into Solent Sky in Southampton.

Museum of Berkshire Aviation is generally open midweek? I've always been midweek but it may depend on the availability of volunteers. It's a bit of a honey hole with half a dozen interesting frames and a lot of models - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=55112

If you pop up the A1 you can visit http://www.shuttleworth.org/ then pop down to the A505 and across to Duxford afterwards.
