Just a heads-up that the Large Flying Model Association show is being held again on the 21st. (see here)

I went a couple of years ago and its well worth a look, the models and flying are superb and its even better when you realise that theres no additional charge to get in

Last year, there was a charge of £3.00 I think, to have a wander around the compund where the models are. It's worth it

DUXFORD PREPARES TO STAGE SMALLEST AIR SHOW OF THE YEAR

Imperial War Museum Duxford will be staging an air show with a difference when it hosts the Large Flying Model Association's air display on Sunday 21 September. Giant model aircraft with wingspans of over 15 feet will be taking to the air for the event which draws modeling fans to Duxford from all over Europe.

Scale versions of some of the world's most famous aircraft will be put through their paces for the Duxford crowds, flown by around 50 of the UK's top large model 'pilots'. The models, essentially small unmanned aircraft, are radio-controlled using state of the art equipment and need up to four crew on the ground to keep them in the air.

A whole day of model flying is in store for visitors who will be treated to flights by a Lancaster bomber and a Wellington bomber as well as wartime favourites which no longer exist such as the Handley Page Harrow. Among the models will be scale replicas of real historic aircraft from Duxford's famous collection including Spitfires, the P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt. The attention to detail and accuracy is stunning and sometimes the model pilots who sit in the aircraft are modeled on the real aircraft's regular pilot! Many hundreds, sometimes thousands, of hours of painstaking and skilled work has gone into hand building each model.

Richard Ashton, Director, Imperial War Museum Duxford explains "This is an event that really appeals to everyone. Children love to see the small aircraft while technically-minded adults can marvel at the engineering ingenuity that goes into building these incredibly impressive models that are authentic in every detail. This is the main event of its kind in the UK and each year the crews look forward to flying their aircraft at our famous airfield."

Model aircraft will begin to arrive on Saturday 20 September when there will be opportunities to see the aircraft taking part in the display and meet their creators.

The Duxford Large Flying Model Day will take place on Sunday 21 September. Imperial War Museum Duxford is just south of Cambridge at Junction 10 of the M11. The Museum opens at 10.00am - model aircraft will be flying all day, with a break for lunch. Admission is £16 for adults, £12.80 for Seniors and Students; children under 16 are admitted free of charge. Concessions are available - see website for details. Ample free parking is available. For further information, visit www.iwm.org.uk/duxford or telephone 01223 835 000.

Please note: all model flying is subject to weather and serviceability.

Saturday arrivals from outside anyone?
