Reds tribute to Lanc??

Post by docmattc »

I was stood on the flightline infront of the A380 today so no commentary to be heard. During the Red Arrows display the Lancaster taxied ober to the otherside of the field and turned back (into a very photogenic position). At the end of the display, the Red Arrows came over in what looked to be a missing man while the Lancaster seemed to rev up its engines a lot.

Anyone know if what was happening?

Thanks, but this was at the end of the Reds' display but before the BBMF took off.

And before take-off too. As most warbirds do.

And indeed most (if not all) piston engined aircraft. Go to your local general aviation airfield and you will witness what many on here disparagingly call "spamcans" performing power checks at the hold before take-off.
nothing is confirmed at a show until its u/c hits the tarmac or it is running in for its display.....

There was no connection between the two, though I can't recall what Reds formation you are referring to. Re the "revving up"; all piston engined aeroplanes will do this - on start up to ensure magnetos are operating within limits and to warm up the carb and oil temps across varying power settings. On shut down it's done to burn off carbon deposits on the plugs. Standing next to something as wonderful as the Lanc with 4 Merlins at full chat during this procedure is a magic moment in aviation.... :music:

The Lanc won't depart from the classics enclave like the Spit did, so had to cross the runway to position for a longer take-off run at an agreed point in the Red's display so as little time as possible was lost in backtracking, lining up, and doing the power runup before the BBMF launched

Being in the Caravan at the end of the runway at Coningsby as the BBMF return is an experience I'll never forget. Seeing the C/O bring a Spitfire in over the caravan was awesome!!
Sometimes the situation calls for highly accurate, high explosive. Paveway, for when diplomacy isn't enough.
