For all the excited pre show hype of goodies on show, it is staggeringly weak. Take the Spanish Harrier (a couple of passes and a bit of hovering) and the P-8 out and its very ordinary. The Turkish Army Mangusta has even done a runner :wall: although the Air Combat Command Lynx could be good

Still at least the punters should see a VTOL jet design that works.

Andy, was the Superbug display any better/worse than at RIAT last weekend??!

On Monday it appeared to me to be the same.

Just for interest what differences in the regulations allow me to be closer to the runway at Farnborough than Fairford and the display line to be closer to me at Farnborough than RIAT?

The display line has to be 230metres at its closest point to the crowd line. If it's a dead straight line then that isn't a problem. But where it isn't say at Fairford where at the western end it pertrudes north slightly to allow cars into green car park, that is the datum for the 230m display line, hence being roughly 250m from the main crowd.

The big difference between the two is display minima, Farnborough self impose a 1500ft minimum altitude which makes photography of smaller flying acts virtually useless.

Should have been up our end of the display line (western end) we were given free bottles of water during the afternoon when it became apparent the heat was getting ridiculous. I also took two of my own drinks in without a problem.

Not sure where you were eating, but I managed to grab a cheese burger for £5 (about going rate most places) and if I'd wanted chips it would have totaled £8 - I've paid more for less at big events before. I'd taken my own food, but fancied something hot to nibble on.

boff180 wrote:Also another warning, if you are bringing a bag expect problems getting in.

I arrived at 0915 and joined the line for people with passes and bags... Unfortunately this line were receiving the most stringent security checks airport style, including the removal of Belts!!! I finally entered the showground at 1015 thoroughly cheesed off.

Another vindication for using Gate I. Drove straight in (although questioning looks were given to the Corsa), parked up, waited five minutes for the bus, arrived at security checks, they put the bag through the scanner I went through the arch, bag was given back no problems. Staff were friendly and cheerful too. All-in-all about 15 minutes from driving in to entering the showground. Also no queues or traffic problems leaving the show at the end. Seriously considering using it for entry on the public days if it's possible.

Oh and belts set the arches off (having worked this type of security it's quite amazing how little metal can set them off), which would then lead to you being patted down (which done properly takes a couple of minutes at least) which would then make it a longer process. Granted they should have had someone further up the line asking you to remove such items to save time before you got to the arches.

Hmmm, interesting. She was parked in front of the Black Sheds yesterday, so I wonder what has happened for her to be removed from the schedule.

Although saying that, the schedule's still in alphabetical order on the website so perhaps she's just been overlooked/deleted accidentally when they removed the F35 from the list (here's hoping).

The canberra was never on the list of flying participants on the official site, even after it was confirmed on their official facebook page that it had validated and was now in the flying display for the public days, so I'm guessing they have just forgotten to add it on their official list.

*Edit I note that it has now just been added on the official list on their website

Right hand, left hand, obviously at Farnborough.

Nice to see she's there (usual caveats aside), panic over.

Haven't encountered any major problems the last two days. Parking in Queens Parade there were plenty of buses running to the airfield. Queued for about 20 mins Tuesday and was in at 09:35 but no security checks as I was just waived straight through because the queues were getting too long. It didn't appear as busy today - queued for about 10 mins, through security and in at 9:30.

Not sure what it's going to be like for those going at the weekend though!

I've decided to brave the 30oC forecast for Friday and accept the fact that the F-35 has disappointed again!

From what I'm hearing, car park/gate I is a good choice, probably no problems taking a camera bag, take some own drinks and go for cheeseburgers at a fiver a pop ......... oh and plenty of sunscreen and a hat!

Anything else I should consider?

Thank you

If you want to photograph the static, take either a cherrypicker or an 8mm lens.

I have been in on the last two days using the I gate carpark and it has been a breeze. Although I only live around the corner its has taken me 15min each time between leaving home and being inside the show ground.
Yes it is not a great show for photographing the static, luckily I got most of it as it arrived. There was some truly exotic aircraft in there though which were the highlights of the show. Chinese Avanti, Ethopian DHC8, American eagle CRJ, The two SSJ's and the Seychelles Twin Otter really stand out. Even the Finmeccia stand seemed friendlier this year with no areas shut off. Textron area however was a nightmare, no chance of a photo of the scorpion.
The flying was a mixture of excitement and dros. Dross was UAV, Parajet, Starduster, and red devils. The rest however was top notch, the Airbuses coordination was amazing as all 3 departed after the preceding aircraft had landed and was pushed back into the static . Typhoon was excellent and very low, F-18 was the normal display and P-8 and 787 were really thrown about. IMHO they really need to get the likes of Bombardier and Embraer to fly some of their aircraft too.
I have been to every show since 78 and IMHO this was the best lineup since the Russian fighters stopped coming. What I want from Farnborough is exotic aircraft and certainly got that.
