Vulcan @ Cosford - news

Postby garethbrum on Sun 07 Jun 2009, 10:13 pm

From the new pop-up on the site:

We know that many of you have noticed that the Vulcan to the Sky website indicates that their first display this summer will be at the Cosford Air Show whereas our website does not include XH558 in the flying programme.

We have agreed with the Trust that Vulcan will attend the Cosford Air Show but we are aware that, as yet, she has not flown this year. With a week to go before our show it still remains distinctly possible for Vulcan to attend but after her winter service she will have to achieve at least one flight beforehand and hence there is still some risk she will not make it.

We remain hopeful the Vulcan will attend but, like you, we can do little but keep our fingers crossed.

Hmmmmmmm.

Good of Cosford to be up-front about the situation.

Unless XH558 flies next week, I very much doubt I'll be going to Cosford.

Seems a bit ominous to me, but it's been speculated for some time. I'm sceptical; there just seems too much work for them to do in less than seven days. Would be a massive shame for '558 to miss Cosford two years in a row.

Hope I'm proved wrong though!

I just wonder why they didn't start doing the servicing earlier, and fly the aircraft earlier. I know there has been a problem with the engines but if they started earlier they'd have it sorted.

The more airshows they miss - the more money and support they lose!

Since you obviously understand how to do things better than TVOC, why not volunteer your services?

wasnt it all to do with the pledge scheme? They didnt want to start without knowing everything was in place for the display season or something along those lines?
I'm fairly confident though, wasnt they supposed to be doing the change today that leaves the rest of the week for a flight, as has been said before they could merge the test flight display authorisation(sp?) and practise on saturday?

Cosford's rehearsals are usually on the Friday, so I suspect weather-permitting, that might be the day TVOC are aiming for...

Of course, being VFR-only, the weather could balls-up those plans as looking at the week ahead, it's not planned to be great.

Engine going in today; it's pretty much up to RR/MA what happens next.

The original plan was practices prior to appearing at the Brize families day, then Cosford the next day.

Latest from Vulcan site -

News Update – Wednesday 10th June 2009

We have all been on tenterhooks waiting for the result of an on-site review by Rolls-Royce specialist engineers of the corrosion discovered in three of our engines, two of which are currently installed on XH558. I am delighted to let everyone know that Rolls-Royce has agreed that it is acceptable to continue to fly using the installed engines.

We can therefore proceed with final preparations for the display season, starting with a ground test, air test and practice display sorties in the next few days. We are on a timescale which could get us to the RAF Cosford airshow on Sunday 14th, assuming the weather remains favourable, and we hit no further snags.

Finally, I would like to thank TERBERG DTS UK for their kind donation of a van to act as our Engineering Support vehicle.

Look for XH558 in the air shortly!

Best Regards,

Robert Pleming Chief Executive – Vulcan To The Sky Trust.

They couldn't start servicing earlier due to not having any funds.
Only when the pledge campaign was a success could they go forward and involve Marshalls who gave a date of April 20th for their techs to be available so servicing could begin.

Believe it or not, they're fully aware of that and are endeavoring to make it to as many shows as possible. Hopefully beginning this weekend. :vulcan:
