If even quite a small percentage of those were to visit the museum then that would be more visitors than the museum would get in a bog standard day. The economics are as always; a proportion of visitors will buy something in the cafe/shop.
Furthermore, as a museum curator, you want as many people as possible to see the collection, that's your purpose in life. Staying open an extra couple of hours for the big annual event is an opportunity, surely.
Furtherfuthermore, up until a couple of years ago not only did the museum stay open longer on show day, they used to open the hangar doors, throwing daylight on the collection, and even were known to wheel a handful of exhibits outside.
That really is pathetic - I was long gone by 6pm but it seems idiotic to close "at the normal time - todays no different"
Since the museum has become a RAF museum, I feel the link between it and air show has gone, which sounds bizarre. As Nige said, I used to look forward to see what old timers had been wheeled outside to see a bit of day light. Now you have to snake your way through car showrooms and even more fun fair rides to even get into the blessed museum hangars....

) I saw some superb flying in a variety of aircraft and I got some nice shots to remember it by, one or two of which may even make it to the wall. So all in all it was a cracking day....
