Wishlist for 2012

Post by parabola50 »

Things have got very quiet around here recently so this might get an interesting discussion going.

If you could pick three participants for next years RIAT, what would they be?

I'd go for...

Mi-24
B-52
and a B-1.

All flying of course. I'm not sure how realistic the list is. I'd love to see the Hind which I know attended a while ago. Which country was it from? Any chance of this happening again?

TU-95,
TU-22
IL-38

IL-76
Mil-24 / Mil 35

(Edit) Sorry I never read the question, I'd have the top 3, but if 5 was an option...
6D | 7D | 60D
11-16 f/2.8 | 24-105 IS L | 70-300 IS USM | 50 f/1.4 | 100 f/2.8 | 400 f/5.6

My choices would be as follows

Super Etendard - Now Flottille 11F have started to transition to Rafale M, it's a dying breed in Europe with only Flottille 17F left.

Phantom - From anywhere

Mirage F1 - So close this year yet so far

The Hind would have been a Czech example.

My top three

Libyan MiG-21 or 23 (static or flying)
Polish Mig-29 (flying)
Asas de Portugal (flying obviously)

Su35, PAK FA and the Blue Angels for me. The chance of any is slim in the extreme but there's no harm in hoping.

2. B-52 in Flying display ( Wasn't the same without it this year )
3. Mig 29 in flying display ( Slovak , Polish or the Russian OVT )

Is the F35 going to be displayed at Farnborough? I don't really know how it works, but from what I've read this would make it easier for RIAT to get one booked in to their display. It'd be great to see one in action.

An 225
C-5
C-17 (Papa)
NASA's SOFIA
Il 76
Anything from China (rest of their inventory can come in future years)
Greek F-16 display
Austrian and Italian Typhoons
Return of the Typhoon/Spitfire duo
Mig 15
F-22 (incl Heritage Flight)
Some role demos from different countries (try to get some with a different scenario)

Huh, only three items allowed???? That doesn't make a RIAT!!!
A weather forecast is a forecast and just that

Whilst I love the B52 and B1 I always find the B52 display of 2 passes quite long and the B1 for many years very tame. However, hoping to be realistic.....

1. B1 - but with plenty or rolls
2. Mig 29 - been too long....
3. Harrier - suddenly taken away from us last year so hopefully bring one in
4. F4 Phantom - one last time

Thats 4. Oh well.

Bit of a theme developing already! Oh well...

1. B-1B - sadly missed from the last few flying displays.
2. MiG-29
3. German F-4F - last chance for a RIAT appearance perhaps?

Given the state of the global economy at the moment, let's just hope we actually get a show!

Almost everyone is wanting to see a Phantom. Do they normally give a good show or is it just getting rarer to see one display?

Sadly, they no longer display at all! If we get one at all it'll be on static.

The Luftwaffe withdrew all fast jet displays in 2003, and since then there has been no Phantom demo on the European airshow circuit. The reason a lot of us want to see a Phantom at RIAT next year is because the Luftwaffe's Phantoms are due to retire in 2013, being replaced by the Typhoon. When the last of the German Phantoms have finally wound their smoky way off to Valhalla, that only leaves the Greeks and Turks as the sole remaining Phantom operators in Europe... and they are far less frequent visitors to these shores than the German Tooms, who have been stalwarts of the UK airshow scene for about as long as any of us can remember.

The USAF heritage flight operates a Phantom, would there be anything to stop that from coming over?

Being realistic:
FLYING
1: B1
2: Mig29
3: SU27 (Hoping the Ukraines have tightened up their procedures since Lviv, & if the money is in the budget this year!)

STATIC
1: F4
2: Libyan Transport (AN26, C130 or IL76)
3: Breitling Constellation (a tad pricey?)

Depends on the venue. At Manching in 2007 the gorgous orange special schemed duo of F-4F and Tonka displayed along with a plain jane Taifun.. Wasn't there a full GAF Tiffie demo at Ostrava last month too??

Think the demo was flown by an EADS pilot mate. Pretty sure it was at Sion last month too?

Money - although I'd go to any airshow that had a flying Phantom as the sole aircraft on the field!
