For the "special aircraft", I am going to throw a curveball. I was speaking to a friend last week, who will be helping out at the Air Tattoo, and he is adamant that it will be a Tupolev Tu-95 "Bear". Obviously I am taking this with a pinch of salt; my guess is that it is the SAAB Viggen.

As for the country, I'm still more certain it will be the JASDF rather than the Chinese.

I realy hope your friend is reliable as i would love to see a Tu-95 Bear

I think we all would! Very unlikely though.

Did we ever get confirmation of the Omega KDC-10 on static? Could just be my mind playing tricks on me, but was it actually ever confirmed? It's definitely not on the list.
Posting comments on an aviation-related chatroom, are ya? Looks like it an' all...

My guess on the special aircraft is either a TU-95 Bear or a Tu-160 Blackjack. They would be wonderful to see at RIAT, and the latter is a lookalike for a B-1, so I guess that would satisfy us all wanting a B-1B Lancer

For the nation, I'm going with Japan or China too, I can't see any other nation coming over with a "special" aircraft, unless Kazahkstan turn up with a MIG-31 Foxhound!

The Sukhoi PAK FA T50 is supposed to be at Farnborough, not sure if it is the flying one or a plastic model but that is a possibility.

Edit:having the "bear" there does mix in with the cold war theme though

Is the "special aircraft" and the "new nation" one and the same or are they different?

I would love to see it, but I would be pleasantly surprised.

I think they are different. There is a special aircraft coming, and there is a new nation, so I am looking forward to it.

I have always understood it was the same thing. That is until people started to claim here, it was an aircraft from a country being a regular visitor at RIAT, or countries that don't operate the aircraft mentioned in the same post.

BTW. every aircraft coming from a new nation should be special anyway.

Dont know and would not bet on them being one and the same.

I know folks seem to think it is going to be China or Japan for the new country but there are still other counties on the invite list that would be new. I think the following is about correct.

Bahrain
Bangladesh
China
Cuba
Egypt
Iceland
Indonesia
Iraq
Japan
Lebanon
Macedonia
Mexico
Nigeria
Philippines
Serbia
Thailand
Tunisia

Anyone fancy a Hunter from the Lebanon as the Special One?

As mentioned several times (in several different show areas) this is just a calendar that lists most of the major airshows in europe.

Just a thought but with all the stories leading up to this could the special one be a U2?

Seriously? :clown:

What do you want another current serial number to tick off a sad list?

If the Viggen comes it would make it the best IAT for years

New ' update ' in the Invited aircraft section.. http://www.airtattoo.com/airshow/aircra ... -countries

" NEWS: The response to our invitations to the world's air arms to send aircraft to RIAT 2012 has been fantastic. There are still a number of countries from who we haven't heard and a number of countries have had to regrettably decline our 2012 invitation. We are still in discussion with a small number of operators regarding possible attendance at RIAT 2012 and we will update as soon as we have any further information."

Canada and Ireland now also listed as being in discussion with RIAT..

To be honest the only real surprises there are Austria and Spain.

Seems updates may be more frequent from now on!]

On Facebook someone asked: " Will there be updates more often now or just on the regular Thursday update ? "

To which they replied : " Hi, from now on the aircraft participation list will be updated as soon as we are allowed to release information. Thanks."

 Cheers, Jamie.

Given the financial state of the country, Spain isn't a surprise to me.
