last chance to see

Am I right in thinking 2012 is the last chance for RIAT has to get a German F4 ?

Any other aircraft that are close to retirement?

Possibly on static. I've heard at present there won't be a flying F4 Display from the Germans in 2012.

I'm not sure anyone would have expected there to be a flying F4 from the Germans next year... although I'd be interested to know where you heard this? Or is it a case of "reliable source"...

Super Étendard is becoming a engendered beast within the French Navy. I believe they are down to one squadron.. now Flottille 11F has started conversion to Rafale. Due out of service 2015 according to Wikipedia so hopefully a couple more chances of seeing one

There was a thread on FC last month saying the A-7's could be gone by the end of the year  There was a link to a Greek website from memory. Not seen any more info since the initial thread

Looking back 5 years or so to when Greek A-7's, Spanish F1's and German F-4's were regular attenders, and sadly were overlooked. Now we're begging for them to appear in their twilight years!

I would start a little closer to home with a Vicky and even include Swiss F-5s on that list that aren't in display colours. Haven't seen any of those bad boys since the days of Nomad!

I wish we could say Spanish F1s were regular attendees in the UK in recent years, but I don't think we've seen one over here since 2001!

Vicky-10 is a good shout and any of the endangered species from Boscombe would be appreciated too.

...me!

RIAT 2011 was my final show as DD Air Ops. After Christmas I will be leaving DBH for pastures new. I have worked here for very nearly nine years and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it but it was time for a new challenge. I have made some great friends during that time, many of whom appear here on UKAR, and have some fantastic memories to take with me.

Happy Christmas to you all and I will try to keep up to date with the airshow scene!

Cheers,

Rob.

French Hawkeye? They haven't had them very long - what are they replacing them with?

Surprises me. If they go out so soon, why would Germany have bought the Dutch Lynx simulator, to be delivered after the Dutch phased out their machines?

Back to topic: Dutch Allouette III will be gone by August, AB-412's fate still not clear (that means contradicting messages, some indicating retirement before 2013). Doubt if the changes for a Lynx at RIAT this year are good, given RIAT's dates clashing with Navy Days.

If DBH are setting aside cash on any star participants this year, on the lines of last year's Ukrainian Il-76 and Su-27, I'd vote for Qinetiq's One-Eleven and Andover if still flying.

Closer to home, less costly (we might imagine) than the Ukrainians, and Qinetiq may not be inclined to send them along for purely historical/sentimental reasons.

The German Lynx fleet will be around for another five or six years, there is a programme to replace both the Lynx and the Sea King with a single type, either CH-148 Cyclone or the MH-90 German Naval NH-90.

Of Chris' list I think its fair to say that the following we definitely won't see in 2013...

German AF F-4 Phantom
Greek AF A-7 Corsair

Most the others have a few years left...

Other types worth getting - given impending retirement - might be:

French Navy Lynx - To be replaced by NH90
Italian Navy Sea King - Being replaced by NH90 and EH101
Italian AF AB212 - Being replaced by AW139 - first AMI AW139 is flying
Belgian Navy Alouette III
Swedish AF Super Puma - Being replaced by Black Hawk and NH90
Greek Army Huey - To be replaced by, you guessed it, the NH90, if the money exists!

The Greeks plan to have the F4 in service until the latter part of this decade at the earliest. The A7's may be around for a little longer than what is currently being put about due to the financial problems in Greece. It has been suggested to keep the one Sqn flying them with a reduced number of airframes.

Although the chances of seeing any of them over here any time soon is slim.

French getting rid of their Hawkeyes? I thought they just ordered another one, with the current ones going through an upgrade
