US 70th Anniversary versus US 50th/60th anniversary
US 70th Anniversary versus US 50th/60th anniversary
My question is did RIAT celebrate the US's 50th and 60th and if so what aircraft made it onto static and flying and how many would be able to come back next year?

List of 2007 aircraft is on the RIAT website : http://www.airtattoo.com/airshow/visiting/lookingback/2007/part

Re: US 70th Anniversary versus US 50th/60th anniversary
2007 was my first RIAT. Although the U.S. flying participants were amazing - Lancer, Stratofortress, Nighthawk, Eagles (including a heritage flight with a Mustang IIRC) and the Thunderbirds - it wasn't actually that large in number. The static was though, and look at that list of RAF participants!
If next year brings the Raptor and Lightning II back, along with the Thunderbirds and even a Lancer again, the flying could be very similar. I doubt whether the static will stack up but that's not a surprise!

Not a bad list that.

Re: US 70th Anniversary versus US 50th/60th anniversary
Not including additional visitors in the build up and over the weekend, 1997 contribution was 5 x A-10, 4 x B-1, B-2, 2 x B-52, C-5, KC-10, C-17, C-21, , 6 x C-130, EC-130, 2 x HC-130, MC-130, EC-135, 9 x KC-135, C-141, 6 x F-15C, 6 x F-15E, 8 x F-16 (including 4 from Shaw and 2 from Cannon), 2 x F-117 and an MH-53.
Of those 4 x A-10, 2 x B-1, B-2, B-52, C-17, 2 x F-16 (from Shaw), F-117, KC-135 and 8 x F-15 were in the flying display.
In 2007 we had 2 x A-10, 2 x B-1, 2 x B-52, C-5, KC-10, C-17 (TB support), C-21, 3 x C-130, HC-130, 2 x MC-130, KC-135, 3 x F-15E, 3 x F-16, 2 x F-117, MH-53, T-1 and T-43. Plus 8 x F-16 of the Thunderbirds.
Of those the Thunderbirds, B-1, B-52, F-15E and F-117 flew.
I would expect next year's contribution to be nowhere near as large, but wouldn't be surprised to see a B-1 and B-52 back at the show.

Wow, 1997, Great line up and great memories!
Please please please keep with tradition and have at least one B1 in the flying display on another of their major anniversary years!

Looking at those lists would it be too much to wish for B-1s, B-52s, F-22s, F-35A&Bs, F-16s, F-15's, A-10s, numerous C-130s, KC-10, Kc-135s, Ec-135, C-5, C-17, AWAC, including thunderbirds, plus US marine, navy, reserve, home guard stuff etc etc. All possible I reckon

I really don't understand this mentality, it's the US Air Force's anniversary so why would the others branches of the military commit extra aircraft for it?!
Re: US 70th Anniversary versus US 50th/60th anniversary
Not to mention the addition of a non-existent branch of the military, the "home guard"!

Re: US 70th Anniversary versus US 50th/60th anniversary
We'll get a single flypast from a pair of F-15s from Lakenheath and probably the Osprey again, plus a B-52 on static. That's my pessimistic prediction.

Have to correct, a few of these weren't there for the USAF anniversary, but for the Tiger event (at least two lancers, one KC-135 and I think also a few Eagles. Not claiming this list is complete).capercaillie wrote:Not including additional visitors in the build up and over the weekend, 1997 contribution was 5 x A-10, 4 x B-1, B-2, 2 x B-52, C-5, KC-10, C-17, C-21, , 6 x C-130, EC-130, 2 x HC-130, MC-130, EC-135, 9 x KC-135, C-141, 6 x F-15C, 6 x F-15E, 8 x F-16 (including 4 from Shaw and 2 from Cannon), 2 x F-117 and an MH-53.

They can't celebrate more than one occasion then? You'll find several were also present for the superb Fighter gathering that year, it wasn't exclusive.
Re: US 70th Anniversary versus US 50th/60th anniversary
So that's settled then, 2017 will be a joint theme of USAF 70th anniversary and Tiger meet!

Did the U.S. send an SR-71 in 1997? It retired the following year from USAF service so just wondered. If not when (if ever, but I think I've seen photos) did one last attend?

I think 1989 was the last time an SR-71 attended.

USMC still has 'em
First squadron (VMAQT-1) stood down at the Cherry Point air show; I believe the plan is for each of the three remaining squadrons to stand down one a year. So, at least a handful should be around until 2019-ish.

1997 also had one of the F100 Super Sabres flying in the display from Wittmund.

Re: US 70th Anniversary versus US 50th/60th anniversary
I've probably already asked this or putting it in the wrong topic, but does anybody have any ideas as to when the thunderbirds are likely to update there schedule for 2017?
Re: US 70th Anniversary versus US 50th/60th anniversary
Most likely at the ICAS convention - 5th-8th of December.
