Low fly locations

Low fly locations

Postby stranexuk on Mon 30 Jul 2012, 5:02 am

Hi all, I've done several locations in Wales but am on holiday in the Moffat Valley and Lake District in September and looking for a good guide on the various locations available.

I know there were two websites, warplane and lowfly.net that had some locations but both of these seem to be unavailable at present? Apart from fox2, does anyone know of any other "guides" or can even help me directly? I know of dunmail, thirlmere, tebay etc but it's knowing where to go and which tracks to follow when I get there that I'm interested in.

There has been a recent series on airforces monthly but unfortunately their website does not list which location was in which magazine. Whilst im happy to order some back copies I don't want to order all 10 (?) only to find they cover locations in Wales I already know about!

Any help gratefully received!

There are three or four excellent spots in the S-M valley.
The North side ridge behind the cafe at the Loch of Lowes is easily reached . Gives excellent overview towards St Mary's Loch but you may find traffic tends to be a bit over to the south side and fairly straight and level there, also you will be shooting into light all day.
The hilll on the south side of St Mary's Loch , East of Tibby Shiels Inn gives one of the best locations in the country for over water shots . A steep climb to the apex of a left hand bend for the traffic which is flowed East to West . Light is behind you .
Moving Westwards from Loch of Lowes , the national trust car park for the Grey Mare Waterfall affords a place tp access the Southern hillside overlooking a very narrow part of the valley with good topside opportunities. you need to be towards the East end but short of the narrowest part to get them descending into the wider part .
Between Grey Mare and Loch of Lowes is the corner at Muchra. The North side hill at the apex of the right handeer gives great topside chances but can be tricky for light .

Excellent Neil, that's very helpful and much appreciated! I don't suppose you would be as kind to supply me any lats/longs of the locations you mention so I can plan a route up to them? Are there marked paths to these locations or is it more a case of finding your own way up to a suitable location?

If anyone is able to offer similar info on Lakes locations or indeed adevise which copies of AFM had which locations in, I'd also be extremely grateful!

Sorry, I have no idea how this ties into my original post but in answer to your question there is a viewing area at the Brandon end of Lakenheath adjacent to the threshold. There's no longer a viewing area at Mildenhall but if you have wheels or are prepared for a lot of walking there are several good locations for viewing....check out the various guides on the internet such as this http://www.pb-photos.com/Images/Aviation/New%20Mildenhall/index.html

I'd say Brandon is your best bet for rail travel. How do you intend to get to the bases after you get off the train?

I wont be able to get to the air base. I was hoping there would be a park nearby where we could see some flying. Thanks for your help and apologies to the op for hijacking the thread.

There is indeed one at Dunkeld - but there is one in the S-M valley - at the West end and almost part of St Mary's Loch just a narrow strip of ground separates the two and Tibby Shiels Inn sits on it.
To be correct I see the S-M one is named as " Loch of the Lowes " as opposed to the Dunkeld Loch of Lowes. Sorry for any confusion.

Easier just to get on Google maps , drop down onto the road and you will see quite a bit of what I'm referring to.
Finding a place to park the car can be a problem . For the Muchra corner( i.e.Paper hill on the North side of the A708) I used to go further East park opposite a cottage by the road and take the long way up a track leading back Westward up the easier slope of the shoulder . (Rather than try the straight up approach direct .
I'll see what I can dig up for you and send you a p.m .
There were no marked paths at the Grey Mare south side of the A708 - just a hard slog up the hillside.
The ridge behind the cafe at Loch of Lowes has a track leading up - take that and bear left as you get up top.
The south side of St Mary's Loch is a b-gger to climb and I honestly don't know the best way in to there - It may be from the Tibby Shiels area along the bank and up through a firebreak gap or possibly you can get in and up from the East end of the Loch easier.(Never went to that spot - just eyed it enviously from other locations.)
