loudest plane without afterburners
Hi all whats the loudest plane without afterburners?
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
I know it's not the loudest but many years ago I was at Brize and a visiting Jet Provost T3 took off and it was very loud, even compared to the VC10's and all the other visitors that day! Another loud one was definately the Vulcan!
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
A Dominie is pretty loud when your near it. Especially 4 parking up at once
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
Personally, I thought the Vulcan at Bruntingthorpe during Cold War Jet in May 08 was darn loud!! That or the Tu-95!!
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
USAF T-39's Departing RAF Northolt!!!!, the whole place vibrated with the noise

The dinn is (was...) indescribabubble, espeshly if you hapened to be lirking at the otha end of the runway with the Buff coming strate four you... It was paineful... And four propella-engined aircraft, the C-119 used to make a fare old raket...

Re: loudist plane without afterburners
The most obvious choice I would say has to be the Vulcan. However, there have been many more contenders in the past, both Military and Civilian.
i.e. Early Boeing 707s, VC10s, the other V Bombers (Valiant and Victor) and among the twin and single engined variety; All marks of Javelin up to the mark 7 (the 8s and 9s had afterburner!) and the Sea Vixen. Oh and the Mark 9 Canberra and any Hunters from mark 6 upwards. All guaranteed to turn heads with their heavy use of throttle!

I have danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings!
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
I would have to say that the loudest I've heard is the Vulcan in a power climb. That was LOUD!
I'm talking back in the old days though when the RAF used to throw it around the sky.

This was apparently one of the loudest, although I doubt many on here would have witnessed a flight Enter the Pogo!

Re: loudist plane without afterburners
Then again just for ear piercing annoyance the Marbore engines of a Magister or Paris are horrible or a hovering Harrier just above your head

Always thought a Trident 3 on take off was pretty loud.

Gets my vote.
We're not lost. We're locationally challenged. http://planemadanna.blogspot.com/

VC-10 or Harrier!
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
As I've inferred before, the loudness depends on how close you are to the nozzle. If your head is inserted into the jet orifice, most jets are equally loud. If however you are located in the next county, it depends on the wind direction and the resonant frequency of the engine in question. I hope this helps.

Pardon?

The loudest aircraft in the world was the XF-84H 'Thunderscreech'
"On the ground, they were reportedly audible 25 miles away.
Sound pressure produced by the aircraft’s turboprop engine caused nausea and headaches among ground crews"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XF-84H_Thunderscreech
And apparantly, this is what is sounded like:

Re: loudist plane without afterburners
I remember being at the end of the runway at Mildenhall back in the 70s,and a KC135 (before re-enginning) took
off...the noise was extremely loud, with a deep rumble sensation in my chest.
Never experienced anything remotely close since then.
Lightnings were the next loudest.I recall being at a show in the 70s,and several took off at the same time
(but that`s with burners,so I guess it doesn`t count)
I also remember the Dan Air 727s doing a full power take off(again, back in the 70s)...you could hear them for 10 minutes after they`d flown overhead

Yep, I'd go along with that.
Especially when they used to do ground runs at RAF St Mawgan (early 1980s) of an evening and you could hear them in Newquay.
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
Personally I would have gone for a BAC1-11, a Trident or a VC10, and maybe the old 707 or DC8 with their old powerplants!

Re: loudist plane without afterburners
The Sort SC 1 in the hover was a really loud and painful little beastie. While I recall the early Vulcan at Farborough as being one big very noisy vibrator
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
Tupolev Tu-104, first aircraft ever to be banned from Heathrow, (in the 1960s) for excessive noise, from the point of view of the average person. However, as previously stated the XF-84H is officially the loudest single engined aircraft ever, although I suspect the XB-70 Valkyrie might run it pretty close on ultimate noise, as I believe it had the greatest installed thrust ever.
nothing is confirmed at a show until its u/c hits the tarmac or it is running in for its display.....
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
I'm with Dunk on this one. Stand at the end of active runway '26 at Brize and watch a heavily loaded VC10 takeoff using water injection is a "whole body" experience
Re: loudist plane without afterburners
I'll go with with the Trident on take off on this! On the ground the noisiest I've worked on is the ATP and the Emb 135/145 APU isn't quiet either
