Someday we will know, where the pilots go
When their work on earth is through.
Where the air is clean, and the engines gleam,
And the skies are always blue.
They have flown alone, with the engine's moan,
As they sweat the great beyond,
And they take delight, at the awesome sight
of the world spread far and yon.

Yet not alone, for above the moan, when the earth is
out of sight,
As they make their stand, He takes their hand,
and guides them through the night.
How near to God are these men of sod,
Who step near death's last door?
Oh, these men are real, not made of steel,
But He knows who goes before,

And how they live, and love and are beloved,
But their love is most for air.
And with death about, they will still fly out,
And leave their troubles there.
He knows these things, of men with wings,
And He knows they are surely true.
And He will give a hand, to such a man
'Cause He's a pilot too.

Awful news and really saddened to hear of this tragedy. Like many others I hoped for the best but feared the worst.

Condolences to the family, especially his wife Emma.

Statement has been put out by Bournemouth Council and Air Festival, for those from the town, the council to open two Books of Condolence for people to express their sympathy and record memories.  The Mayor will be opening these books tomorrow morning at 10am at Bournemouth Town Hall, recording sympathies on behalf the Town and the Council respectively.”

The Books will be available for signing at Bournemouth Town Hall from 10am to 8pm on Sunday 21st August, and every day this week (22nd – 26th August), from 8.30am until 5.15pm.  A collection box for donations will also be available.  The Books will be passed to Flight Lieutenant Egging’s family and collected donations will be given to their chosen charity.

Floral tributes can be laid at the Town Hall.

RIP Red 4. Really sad and upsetting. As a massive fan of the Red Arrows for over 25 years and to be given the nickname of Red 13 by my colleagues at Kemble it is so very hard to accept that this has happened to the best team in the world. My deepest sincerity and condolences to everyone who met and knew him and to his family and the Rest of the team who this will hit the hardest. From the thousands who saw you display may you fly high in heaven, smoke on go!!

Was just at Scampton last week seeing round there HQ

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of-wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air.... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark nor even eagle flew- And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Another terrible day for the aviation world. The loss of Flt Lt Jon Egging has clearly moved a great many people. The Red Arrows are perhaps the most famous team in the world and their dedication, professionalism and patriotism are what display flying is all about and really does represent the best of British.

Thinking out loud here but I wonder if the Blades, given their connections to the Reds, could perform a missing man formation tomorrow in tribute to Flt Lt Egging.

Blue skies Jon.

Also, let's not forget the sacrifice this guy has made, staying with that thing until it hit the ground, putting his life before anyone on the ground had he chosen to leave via Martin Baker.

A true hero.

It's an extremely sad sad night for everyone.

Condolences go to everyone connected to the hero that is Flt Lt Jon Egging.

He will quite rightly go down as a hero for doing what he did in his last moments - I feel sick even just typing that.

The next Reds performance will certainly be a massively emotional performance I'm sure.

I've tweeted and trended #red4hero if anyone wants to pay their respects on Twitter too. (@banks247)

Like all of us ,i'm numb as i type this.I saw them last over Beachy head last week, and they were fantastic as usual.I think that is a great idea regarding the blades performing a missing man formation, and would be a fitting tribute.flt Lt Egging died a true hero, and my thoughts go out to his family and friends.R.I.P. Blue Skies.

Mods. Just an idea but as a tribute from all of us on the site might it be a nice idea to temporarily change the site logo to a Red Hawk,or diamond nine? just a thought.

My deepest condolences go out this night to the family of the pilot involved and a big S! to Flt Lt Egging.
I was so much looking forward to seeing the Reds at Duxford next month, as over here in Austria we do not get the pleasure seeing them very often. Now we are really shattered reading about this accident!

Since their formation The Red Arrows have stood out as representatives of everything that we in Britain are proud of, they are utterly symbolic of the pinnacle of achievement bought about by hard work and determination, they have rightly earned the place they have in so many hearts.
Today many of those hearts are broken!
My condolences go out to Jon’s family, all the other members of the team and their families also.
