Leicester airshow mid 90s ?

Postby Mixed grill on Fri 18 May 2012, 12:28 am

The first airshow thread on here has set me thinking about the old airshows I went to as a kid, for some reason I have it going around my head that in the mid 90s possibly 1995 I went to an airshow called "Leicester airshow" ?

I was still young at the time but seem to remember an F-27 displaying and not much else, not alot to go on but anyone any ideas where this was.

It was a cracking show for such a small, flying club run event and venue. Excellent military participation with good links from the Italians and Germans due to the TTTE at nearby Cottesmore. Concorde was a regular along with the Vulcan and most front line RAF stuff, Harriers operated from the 'field again due to Wittering being in the vicinity-ish. They even had the awesome Canadian Starfighter team in '78 IIRC... Leicester, Shobdon, Sleap, Barton, Goodwood, Halfpenny Green to name a few of these civilian shows that used to put on first rate displays.

lack of sponsorship forced it to finish........ went to a few of these as a kid, the last show was sponsored by the Leicester Mercury newspaper. I think 1995 was the last one.

the adverts inside programmes are always worth a quick scan, have a look at the price of cars etc

Here's the running order for that show -
RAF HARRIERS (X2)
RNAF F-16 FIGHTING FALCON
ROVER DUO
BARNSTORMERS
BBMF
MILES DUO
RAF SEA KING
RAF BULL DOG
RAF NIMROD
RAF TUCANO
CANBERRA B6
RNHF SWORDFISH
RN GAZZELLE DUO
RAF JAGUAR
PITTS SPECIAL
RNAF PILATUS PC-7
RAF HARRIER
RNAF FOKKER F-27 TROOPSHIP
RAF TORNADO
RN SEA KING
RAF RED ARROWS

I attended pretty much every Leicester from 78 until the last one in 96 as it was my local show. Completely agree with comments on this thread. As a small club organised event the Leicestershire Aero Club did put on a great show with several overseas performers other civilian organised shows could only dream of attracting at the time.
