East Lothian is to get a new airport,I remember hearing strong rumours that an entrepreneur had plans to create a commercial airport with excellent viability.New information update,,this airfield will be for light aircraft only (PLA's)
But in due course it may expand to carry passengers...
Planes?,PLANES?!! WE'VE got plenty of planes!

Strat,
I take it this will be based on somewhere like Drem or similar as the runway base should still be there so makes good foundations for a new runway. Great to see GA is very much alive and well and should see a ready made community to move in from the likes of Kirknewton, Perth and Glenrothes.

Geoff,it's as Heidfirst mentioned, the airfield is at Dirleton.I got a wee bit more info on it last night.Much of the airfield is there and will need upgraded to facilitate hangar space a reinstated runway which of course will be brought up to standard as the current runway is needing a lot of work! I was informed that a flying club will be based there but it's also mooted there may be an additional facility to have an air ambulance kept there or at least on standby. It will be used in a similar vein to Perth (Scone) airfield, however the news is that wildlife conservationists have objected despite the go ahead. Now this is just my opinion but I reckon the residents of adjacent Archerfield may get hangar space there and it will ease future short term stays for display aircraft at East Fortune airshow without having to use Edinburgh airport.
I know the one at Drem, much of which is lost to nature!
Back to Dirleton airfield,it is said to get up to 15 movements a day and will have a short hours operation licence (7am to 7pm)
I've yet to discover who the chap is who was wanting to turn it into a passenger carrying airport with excellent facilities as he had planned it to be akin to London City airport.Anyway,it's good news all the same,so I'm wondering when all is set up,what frequency will be allocated? The East Fortune one or a new one? :cuppa:

Have not posted in a while so had to re-register.

Full details of the proposals are at http://pa.eastlothian.gov.uk/online-app ... =firstPage. Look under the tab headed documents. The one labelled Supporting Statement gives the written info and the plans are self explanatory.

The planning officers report to the Council Planning Committee is at http://www.eastlothian.gov.uk/download/ ... d_dirleton Note that it was recommended for refusal but the Councillors approved it.

Local Authority councillors come in for a lot of stick at times so well done to them for having the foresight to go against the recommendation from the council planners and approve it.

Hope its of interest
