How far do you travel to an airshow?
How far do you travel to an airshow?
Just being a tad nosey here.....
How far do you travel to attend an airshow?
We all read on here that some of us leave home at 3/4 am etc to attend one.
So, what would you all consider to be a reasonable distance to travel to an airshow?
Obviously take into account if something special is displaying, i.e., the two Lancs.... , but, generally, what distance?

Re: How far do you travel to an airshow?
I live in Newcastle Upon Tyne, To give you an idea, this year has included Abingdon, Cosford, Waddington, RIAT, Farnborough, East Fortune, Sunderland, Dunsfold, Sywell, Shoreham, Kleine Brogel and finishing off this weekend in Southport. I have also travelled to shows in Pensacola, Nellis and Miramar, Berlin, Paris, Satenas, all major shows in Belgium, Netherlands and France.
Re: How far do you travel to an airshow?
As in, travel in one day to get home that same day? I live in Exeter and have travelled to Fairford, but I have gone as far as Waddington for that show but stayed at a friend's the nights before and after. I also made the trip via London to Waddington for the 3 Avro event.

As far as the show is from my location.
Re: How far do you travel to an airshow?
Waddington has been the furthest I've travelled this year for a show - about a 140 mile trip, but stayed near there the night before and on the Saturday evening as I did both days.
My feeling is that I would travel as far as I could afford - and as far as the Ball & Chain would allow... (Might try for a foreign one, but I know the answer to that already!!)

Time was , anything within range of a tank of fuel.
Now that's down to half a tank , so about a 250-300 Mile round-trip......and that's only if I'm stopping there for a couple of days.

Pretty much.
It does depends on the show & what's on offer. I set off at 3:30am from the Welsh border to get to Duxford on Sunday, but that was on account of me not having a ticket, worrying about the traffic and the show being my only opportunity to see the two Lancasters. That's probably the earliest I have set off. Anything earlier and I'll look at going down the day before and staying somewhere.
If money would allow, I would do a day-trip to a European show if I could. It's possible, I think. In fact I think Andy did that to KB?

30 mins to Old Warden.
40 mins to Duxford or Little Gransden.
Generally can't be doing with more than that any more, I guess I'm getting old. Although once a year (if that), I might travel further, up to about a couple of hours away. It would have to be something "big" eg. Waddington, RIAT etc... AND a line up that I really want to see. At shows like that I'll only do one day... and I'll pay whatever it takes to use "priority" road routes and parking...!

104 miles to Sywell is the furthest I've been this year, with 78 and 60 miles to my regular haunts of Old Warden and Duxford respectively.
Probably wouldn't travel any further in a day with my aging car unless the line-up was particularly outstanding!

Re: How far do you travel to an airshow?
Well... for 2014 I was able to get close to Waddington (Traffic issues) But I did fly 4700 miles to attend RIAT. Next up will be a short hop of 800 or so miles to Nellis in November. But and right now that is a big BUT! There is no site up yet unless someone can help? In February 2015 I hope to fly 7996 miles to Bangalore India for 'Aero India 2015'.

Re: How far do you travel to an airshow?
Kecskemet last year was probaby my furthest.
Sundays 300 mile round trip to Duxford was my farthest this year.
I like to try and go to something new each year though so that will no doubt drive me further and further away as time goes on.

Re: How far do you travel to an airshow?
Furthest so far was Pensacola in 2002 but that was part of a holiday. Did Oceana in 2006 for the last F-14's for just 4 days Jetlagged!!!
Furthest near miss was the Mossie at Ardmore 2 years ago. I was on a Jetboat in Queestown (Dart River, Youtube has loads of vids if you want to see people doing 360's and getting wet )
Bad planning or what

Re: How far do you travel to an airshow?
Abingdon: 61.6 Miles
Fairford: 33.8 Miles
Yeovilton: 55.3 Miles
Shoreham: 136 Miles
So furthest travel for me this year was to Shoreham- next years all going to plan should be Duxford.
