It has some neat features including the ability to self detect damage/problem with a flight control surface and can calibrate the others so that the aircraft continues to fly normally.

It looks like a 'bits of what if type' modellers make.

Will be interesting to see what it can do in time. Appreciate it's only really a tech demonstrator at this stage but the canopy doesn't appear particularly stealthy in a "traditional" sense. I'm also surprised at how small it is, significantly smaller than both the F-22 and F-35, considering it's been mentioned as a possible F-4 and F-15 replacement for the JSDF.

It looks about as stealthy as a luminous breezeblock with a sign with big arrow stuck on it.

The canopy looks like they've just nicked one off a Kawasaki T-4.

Hope it's got a plasma invisibility shield because it looks as stealthy as my left foot, although to be fair when it's in a shoe you dont see it.

Looks more like a fast trainer to be honest, but would i like one at RIAT? yup, sure would!

so is a foot in a trainer more stealthy that a foot not in a trainer, I'm confused? :dizzy:

It's actually 3rd generation stealth, or "stealthy stealth" - the enemy doesn't know it's a stealth aircraft until he doesn't see it, and by then it's too late... :dizzy:

The intakes look small to me, if so maybe lower powered or intended for higher ends of the speed regime ?

No discernible side bays for AA missiles a la F-22, but it does have jolly big elevators so hopefully very manouverable.

I suspect the only reason the Japanese think there may be a market is because America won't export the F-22.

As for self inspection and warning gear, I recently read a big thick book on the F-35; the whole message which came across very clearly was ' this thing will be blooming fantastic, in the unlikely event we can get all of the stuff to work ! '

The self-inspection on the F-35 apparently not only spots a fault and calls to base to order the part to be ready, it identifies the best technician on the base to fit it ...I don't know if it knows if he / she is at the dentist or on holiday, if it's a spoof, it's not mine !

The ATD-X is a pure tech demonstrator ala the US X-planes... it has no pylons what-so-ever.

It's intended she will be flown for two to three years before being retired. The lessons learned will then be used to design the (larger) proposed F-3 which will then replace the F-15 and F-2.

When the enemy does see it they immediately discredit it as a fast trainer. :yahoo:
