Maybe they should have done a better job of looking after it in the first place.

I don't have a problem with donation-based 'crowdfunding' as such, and I've been hoping for a long time that this aircraft could be taken inside and restored, but it's shocking that the IWM's stewardship of this unique aircraft over the last 40 years has allowed this situation to develop.

What do we pay for then when we visit someplace like Duxford? I thought some of it was for the upkeep of the aircraft?
52 in a year! We must be certifiable!

Not to mention the money for "disposing" of aircraft they didn't want, such as the Ju-52.
Perhaps the losses on this year's poorly attended airshows are beginning to pinch?

Judging by the state of the VC10 when I last visited the money certainly hasn't gone there! Reminds me of what happened to the old VM VC10 at Cosford due to BA's neglect, it just sat there and rotted and by the time anyone bothered to notice it was too late and chopped up.
Just shy of half a million is a lot of money, the Victor must be really poor, any idea of what needs doing like a breakdown of costs?

Thump - surely the VC10 is not an IWM aircraft but one of the DAS fleet maintained entirely voluntarily. I saw that Monarch engineers are working weekends voluntarily on the Britannia at the moment to spruce it up.
Some of us, me included, are or have been critical of the IWM in the past but they have a budget provided by the taxpayer, donations and gate receipts. Presumably it is not enough to do everything they and we would like. Hence this plea. As enthusiasts we would probably vote for the conservation/preservation/restoration of every extant unique type but I guess the pot is not bottomless.

Fully agree! I wish they'd started this project much sooner.
Re: IWM Victor fundraising
I'm sure there was somebody on here or Key only a few months back saying the Victor was in excellent shape, naysayers be damned. Somebody was questioning the condition, and the notion was that beyond the obvious cosmetic issues it was in ok condition.

As they say
"The Victor is in good condition internally, but there are signs of corrosion externally. A deep survey is needed to assess its condition. Conservation may take up to five years and will depend on your support. Please help to conserve the Victor for future generations by donating to this campaign."
.....the problem seems to be external as can be seen in places.

I read that there was always an issue with the paintwork, post preservation.

I wonder why they didn't do this before the problems became so severe?

Re: IWM Victor fundraising
Yes but it would appear they haven't got the money now either, so why wait until you need huge amounts, when acting earlier and before the problems developed could have meant you'd need much less? ' A stitch in time...' and all that.
I know IWM take some stick, but they're not silly, they must have seen this coming?

Am I the only one hoping that as part of the restoration, they return her to the original B1 anti-flash white paint scheme..?!

It would be more appropriate for it to be scrapped in I guess, would match the other V-bomber Mk1s that have gone that way in museums in recent times.
In reality though, no, over-rated, camo looked much better.
