A new museum for Bristol's aviation heritage
A new museum for Bristol's aviation heritage
Opening at the end of the summer I believe, and looking pretty good at the moment. More than just a roof over Concorde's head for sure.
Will certainly be making a visit as soon as it's open and I'm able to.

Dismantling of the Bristol Freighter is going well

Re: A new museum for Bristol's aviation heritage
As well as the Freighter, there's other stuff being restored elsewhere that is destined for this museum in due course including a Bolingbroke and a Bristol F2b Fighter.
I believe it will also be housing the RAF Museum's Beaufighter fuselage exhibit, the static Bristol Scout replica that was lodging at Old Warden a few years back, a Type 173 helicopter and a Britannia forward fuselage.

Re: A new museum for Bristol's aviation heritage
It would be good for them to get one of the four Bristol Fighter replicas that were recently discovered and purchased by a chap in New Zealand. I read that there might be up to seven replicas in storage somewhere in Los Angeles, here: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/95614147/aviation-enthusiast-buys-rare-wwi-fighters-flies-them-to-marlborough
Re: A new museum for Bristol's aviation heritage
There's no need.
As I posted above, they are having a genuine one (based on one of the fuselage frames recovered from a barn in Weston on the Green in the 1960s I believe) built up in the US

Re: A new museum for Bristol's aviation heritage
I keep reading Fighter as Freighter and Freighter as Fighter.
Re: A new museum for Bristol's aviation heritage
In any case, the replicas are steel tube-framed lookalikes with inverted 6-cylinder air-cooled Ranger engines, unlike the originals which had a wooden frame and used a V-12 water-cooled Rolls-Royce Falcon. So while they would be okay for an airshow act, they aren't really appropriate to represent the type in a serious museum.

Why? Other than the engines, the type has no connection with Bristol.

Not at all. I just find your unhealthy obsession with that particular airframe rather tedious and unamusing. There is a specific thread for those of you who wish to keep spouting your eternal obsessional Vulcan bollocks. The rest of us just don't care.

You do realise that Bristol ( and more specifically Filton ) does have a historic link with Vulcans, don't you.....not just with regards the engines

You must be great fun at parties.

It doesn't help that a good share of both types survivors/replicas are in NZ?

I wouldn't mind a heads up when this is actually on display to the public, as it was the first type of aeroplane that I went on.

Great news that the Freighter is back in Bristol and I look forward to seeing the aircraft when it is on display.
( Closing the M5 motorway to move it seems a bit over the top, the aircraft is in 3 pieces! )
Congratulations to the team upon this achievement.

I visited yesterday, very impressive facility. Will post photos next week!
Re: A new museum for Bristol's aviation heritage
Glad the Freighter is back home. I donated some cash towards it. The first, I believe, to go on display in the UK.

Bit of of thread resurrection, but does anyone know if this is out on display yet?.

The Freighter is not yet on display. The museum are in the process of raising funds for the restoration and for a new hangar for it to live in.

Bristol Brigand Boys
There is a very rare bit of a Bristol aircraft at Cosford ... from what i can tell it is the last remaining parts of a Bristol Brigand. I have seen pictures of it from when it was elsewhere but by the time i tracked it down it was at Cosford and tucked away.
It is tucked away in a hanger awaiting work being done on it (maybe?) but they won't let anyone go and see it due to the state of the hanger on health and safety grounds.
Not even an ex-Brigand Pilot from 84 Squadron .... with 950 hours flying time .... who did 218 operational strikes ... and is 88 ... and has cancer ... due to Health and Safety
Oh ... and he happens to be my father
But if you want to know more about him and his time in the forgotten war in Malaya then take a look at his web site ... he is trying to put it all down while he can and my brother is publishing it to the web site .. so it does change regularly as he adds more tales of his time out there.
So pop over to The Brigand Boys if you are interested: http://www.brigandboys.org.uk/

MM2, sorry to hear about the H&S nonsense! That link looks like a great read for coming days. Note there is a new Bristol Brigand story on Flyp**t forum today.

Yeah, I heard something similar from a chap I met who volunteers there. He also said something about them now having full time paid employees, not sure how viable that will be long term for such a small museum!
