Sunday Times Culture Magazine.

Post by AlexC »

I was rather disappointed that the Sunday Times this morning reviewed a new book about the RAF by Patrick Bishop called 'The RAF in World War Two' which included the well known colour photo of Flt. Lt. Joe McCarthy and his Dam Buster crew, but the caption incorrectly said that the officer sitting next to Joe was Guy Gibson, when he was in fact Joe's navigator Fg. Off. Donald MacLean. Although to be fair, Don MacLean did have a passing resemblance to Guy Gibson, the fact that he had an observers badge on his tunic should have given something of a clue. I would have expected better of the book reviewer who was Max Hastings.

Not much of an excuse really when it is on Wiki correctly captioned!

I'm guessing it's the newspaper's sub-editor who is at fault, not Max Hastings or Patrick Bishop, both of whom would be able to easily identify Guy Gibson.

Is it this photo?

He really does look like Gibson.

Yes, although it's tightly cropped in the magazine.
