MAN viewing

Post by Orion »

I have just come away from the Runway Viewing Park at MIA after finding that it's now basically a building site with extremely limited views. I've looked at the TAS website which offers a few alternatives one of which is a mound on the south side. The website says you can park your car in a hotel car park which is adjacent but do you need specific permission from the hotel for this? I'd be grateful for advice

Regards

Presuming MIA in this case means Manchester, not Miami!

I wouldn't park in the hotel car park. Sometimes (although rarely!) they get upset and people get clamped.

Have fun on the South side, much better for photos with the sun behind you but a long & muddy walk from the car, with no toilets or food outlets and loads of litter everywhere. Lovely!

Don't think they get upset if you pay and display at the machine.
I usually park on the lane that runs over the little bridge, it's free there.

I was there last week with a couple of friends.

As your coming out of the tunnel, take the first exit and you go up a small side road, there is a crash gate in front of you, you can park up either side of the gate for free there as long as you like.

The hotel car park, is £3 I think (I didn't pay) but the machine is in the hotel lobby, it is the usual "pay and display". I have to admit that it is convienient because after the long trek/ uphill climbs that you have to get to the viewing locations, it is a nice pleasant break to put your gear in the car then go for a swift drink and to use the toilet before beginning your journey home.

I would be careful parking on the grass verge leading to the crash gate, I have heard of people getting ticketed, admittedly it's very rare but it has happened. Best parking in the lane between the road to the crash gate and the hotel.

Many thanks for all the responses. I spent an hour or so on the southern hump yesterday and it is very much as advertised, but one thing though; nobody mentioned the five barred gates. Not an issue for most forumites but it is for this 75 year old! Anyway I sorted that and had an interesting time.

I have searched the internet for any sign of development plans for the Runway Viewing Park and can find non. Does anyone know if it's the intention to re-build the humps elsewhere on the site.

I've not been there in a long while but even when I went it was clear that the mounds weren't sufficient to get a barb-wireless view across the airfield - especially for photography.

Anyway, from what I've just found it appears that Manchester Airport are building a Premium Private Terminal for the rich https://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/premiair/?fbclid=IwAR34soMOnGQZ8hBzs_bDTAP48vvaECnDjPz4VJw7cP-aShiBovFexVhKxn0.

And it looks from the comments on Facebook as if it will obscure the view across to the terminals and that there is utter silence from anyone at the airport about what this will mean to the viewing park. As you can see, I've never had any joy embedding Facebook posts on here so here is a link an you may need to scroll down to the relevant post. https://www.facebook.com/runwayvisitorpark/posts/2228613597188646?hc_location=ufi

Sign of the times - progress and all that.

And how long until that Nimrod gets chopped up? And the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre (at what was RAF St Mawgan) would give their right arm for one I'd expect.

I have changed the title of the thread.
I don't subscribe to Facebook and the first link seems to be broken. I think it's best just to think that the Runway Viewing Park is a dead letter for the enthusiast and move elsewhere. A shame but there you go; it was nice while it lasted.
