Cleethorpes 2015 - Cancelled
Due to lack of funding
Another show not happening in 2015, they're falling like flies!

Very upsetting to hear this about my "local" airshow, unfortunately as I highlighted in my review the council are not prepared to get involved! There was plenty of scope for growth, just a shame it was let down by organisation

Without council money, seaside shows don't stand a chance. You can't charge for entry, so are reliant on council money or sponsorship. The public won't donate voluntarily for something they can get for free.

Re: Cleethorpes 2015 - Cancelled
Cleethorpes Council were absolutely desperate for the show to get canned as they weren't getting a cut of the money made, thus were not willing to assist in the organisation of the show. The only slight conciliation is that the airshow raised £6.8 million for the local community supposedly.

I think " raised £6.8 million for the local community" is a little different to "bringing in over £7.5 million to the local economy"
That £7.5 million will be an estimate based on how many folks turned up and how much they spent over the weekend. How much of that ended up in the local community woudl be anyone's guess.
Why can't they charge for entry? Southport do.

Re: Cleethorpes 2015 - Cancelled
What do Southport actually charge for? Admission to the beach/seafront? Car parking?
Councils are on dodgy ground charging for access to what is already public space that their voters have already paid for.

Re: Cleethorpes 2015 - Cancelled
Correct, though I'm pretty sure the beach is owned by whoever owns the adjacent land. I'd need to check the deeds (not that I can be bothered) but I have a feeling that, at Southport at least, that's not the council?

Remember somewhere (Eastbourne?) trying charging a couple of years ago and it is very quiet on the seafront compared to usual and after that year never doing it again, so can go massively wrong.
Re: Cleethorpes 2015 - Cancelled
I think the seaside show's days might be numbered, given how tight council budgets are, how expensive interesting/rare display acts are, and how elf and safety lurks around every corner.
Wasn't Clacton in crisis? Southend's glory days have long gone.

Re: Cleethorpes 2015 - Cancelled
Yes Clacton was in crisis a few years back, show was scaled back massively, but from that they seem to have rebuilt, I seem to remember reading in one of the local papers that there is now more council funding back in the show. The show at Southend has been massively missed in the area with the extra people attracted to the area over the weekend, not sure what the scale will be, but at least there is something planned again for this year now. With Southend and Lowestoft both falling in last few years, I get the feeling that Clacton benefitted in terms of public attendance. Juxtaposing that though is Bournemouth, started in 2008? and get the feeling from that it is growing every year, the number of people they get shows exactly how successful the seaside shows still can be.
I do get the same general feel though that the seaside shows days are numbered, the reduction of RAF displays has hit the volume of displays they are able to present. With the number of shows falling, one can't help thinking that more warbird/civilian acts will struggle (as Andy was saying in the Duxford thread), with less shows to book the aircraft they will need to keep price low to remain competitive, but ever rising costs are going to make it hard. Or those that do increase their display fee will either not get booked or when are booked will result in less items at the show, which for a seaside show can be a problem. I feel the hard times for seaside shows will hit civilian operators just as hard as the seaside show organizers.

Re: Cleethorpes 2015 - Cancelled
From what I have read the only thing that has cancelled has been the organising team of Andy almond-Bell et al who have been responsible for the show in the past 3 years. It was not financially viable for them to continue with the show.
However, North East Lincolnshire Council leader Chris Shaw has vowed to the Grimsby Telegraph an airshow event of some kind will still take place. He has also said "We have got other people who have asked if they can do an air show, so now we will speak to them. It might not be on the same weekend but there will be some form of air show or display in Cleethorpes next year.” - quote from Grimby telegraph.
So it may be that the council finally want to take charge of the event? other organisers may include the likes of TSA consulting , Air Tattoo Events etc.. so who knows....
Before the Cleethorpes Festival of Flight/ Airshow took place the local council had the likes of the twister team, Aerostars performing during the summer at the resort.
There are rumors that the 'old' Cleethorpes team were setting up a show at Skegness for 2015 and Hull wants a show for 2016 but I guess time will tell!
I am hopeful that a new show will replace the old one and with council backing it may actually work - we know that the council was responsible for the invites to the Belgian Air Component over the last two years ( not the airshow organisers ) so you never know....

with there not being an airshow at Waddington could not some help be forthcoming from there supporters. Just a thought.
