Waddington alternatives in 2015???

Post by craig.mason »

As there is no airshow this year, which airshows are people attending instead in July?

Think you'd have a better day at RIAT, Craig. Much more similar to what you'll have experienced at Waddo, except on a bigger scale.

Legends is a much shorter event, is entirely warbirds, and getting a good view is difficult. Plus if the sun shines, your photographs will be backlit. The atmosphere on the crowdline *can* be unpleasant.

Cost-wise, there's not much difference.

Unless you're a warbird connoisseur, RIAT offers far more bang for your buck.

Unless you want to travel to Yeovilton, RIAT will be the only major international military Airshow in the UK in 2015.

Cosford will be the only other RAF sponsored/assisted show.

Sad state of affairs really :-(

No matter how critical we are of some aspects of RIAT, right now I'm just glad we still have her!

It's true - I look forward to RIAT each year like my daughter looks forward to Christmas.

Losing Waddington this year has left quite a big 'festive' hole in my diary to fill. I will be looking to try new venues/opportunities this year, but hope that Waddo does come back in the future... or a new venue for a big RAF show is found.
Now officially qualifies as a 'regular' at Famous Dave's - El Centro

Just to be picky about what Andy has commented...

The only official Royal Air Force event for 2015 is the RAF Cosford Air Show.
The Royal Navy's two official events for 2015 will be hosted by RNAS Yeovilton & RNAS Culdrose.
RIAT is *techincally* a civilian airshow..! :handbag:

Although not organised by the military, considering RIAT has been marketed for years as "The World's Largest Military Airshow", I think Andy's comment is more than accurate. :handbag: :tongue2: :butt:

Isn't it a shames that the Royal Navy who have two major operational Air Stations ( Yeovilton & Culdrose ) can manage to host Air Shows at both bases to engage the public with the Navy but the RAF has issues with the same....

Instead the RAF has supported RIAT better than it has it's own show at Waddington in the past.

RIAT will be the only option for many to see foreign military demos in 2015 onwards unless the Waddington show can make a comeback in the future.

RIAT, by far, the bigger and better show. That's why. :handbag:

I agree RIAT is bigger in terms of number of aircraft but were the attendance figures at RAF Waddington not higher than RIAT over the last few years?

I thought that RAF Waddington's display in 2012 in particular was awesome with the Black Eagles and lots of International stuff - comparable if not better than RIAT.

But I agree, RIAT for me this year too.

Got to wonder about the appetite that MoD has for airshows given the number of airfields in military ownership that are incapable of hosting for whatever reasons, and the fact that Private Enterprise is definitely this Government's preferred ideology. They can generate income by making aircraft available for display without the financial and insurance risks.
