Old Sarum Centenary Airshow - 16/17 September

Postby Old Sarum on Mon 13 Feb 2017, 1:50 pm

An aviation event to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Old Sarum Airfield will take place on 16-17 September 2017.

Throughout the year, Old Sarum is celebrating with a series of smaller events, including fly-ins and drive-ins. However, the Old Sarum Airshow 2017 will become the focal point of the Airfield's centenary year.

It is anticipated that the show will follow a similar format to the highly successful air display held at the historic Wiltshire airfield in 2015. Plans for the display will be subject to current and future safety regulations.

As more information becomes available it will be published on the Old Sarum airfield (http://www.oldsarumairfield.co.uk) and Old Sarum Airshow (http://www.oldsarumairshow.com) websites.

Lovely little airshow in 2015 so I plan on returning in 2017.

Official announcement: http://www.oldsarumairfield.co.uk/old-s ... show-2017/

It is with heavy heart that we must announce that Old Sarum Airfield will no longer be hosting an air show in September as was hoped. Slipstream, the company responsible for our very successful 2015 event, now believe it will be impossible to stage a similar event this year.

As a result of new regulations put in place following a number of major incidents at air shows throughout England in the past 2 years, we are sadly unable to comply with the extremely high and complex risk assessment needs that would allow Slipstream and ourselves to put on the show we would like to. Rigorous risk assessments have been undertaken and we are sadly the victims of our past popularity.

These regulations define anyone outside of the airfield but still taking up a vantage point within the display area “at risk”. The only way for us to ensure that no-one falls within this category would be to take control of any space within the display area, to cater for these viewers’ safety. However, this would include commanding control of the busy adjacent road network (A345 and Portway), our neighbours at Old Sarum Castle, and Bishopdown and it’s country park. Understandably, with these regulations in mind, we cannot plan for the safety of the people in these areas and therefore the show would not comply with these new conditions. Sadly, these are things outside of our control. We have looked at ways to co-ordinate control of these areas, but ultimately believe that it is impractical. Without such assurances, we simply cannot go ahead.

Whilst we were hoping that the proposed show would help us commemorate the centenary of the airfield, we will be sure to look for other ways top mark this milestone in our history.

A shame, the "Support our Paras" events and the 2015 air display were great little shows in lovely surroundings.

m afraid there are an increasing number of sites that, under current rules will not hold a flying display again. In this I would include Kemble, North Weald, Lee on Solent, Shoreham, and many more. Basically you can not display over habitation, industrial areas, retails areas, and major roads. Unless you can make sure these places are empty.

And yet Duxford shows continue over the M11...

Long time since have been to Duxford but does the display line cross the M11 or is it just on landing? There are certain rules based on aircraft speed, the ones I quoted would be for fast jets.

Again, this boils down to another show lost thanks to one man's gross incompetence and the CAA's frantic arse-covering as their own certification of display pilots was proven not fit for purpose.

And so, another venue is gone.

They do hold the occasional fly-in however, the last one being a couple of months ago or so, so all is not lost. However I was quite disgusted by the amount of litter left behind by the owners of at least one car, and when I mentioned it to some of the people running the airfield they were not at all surprised, saying that visitors or otherwise often leave rubbish on the field, including dirty nappies. We really are turning into a selfish nation, when we leave others to dispose of our litter and rubbish, but on an airfield? That has to be the pits!

There were lots of factors involved in the Shoreham tragedy, let's not reduce it to one man and the CAA.

If the crash hadn't happened and if the CAA hadn't reacted how they had would we be having this conversation?

No.

I fail to see what other factors surrounding Shoreham may have lead to what is now being seen across the country.

Dan's blunt, but correct IMHO.
