NATO Days Ostrava 2018

Post by Harvo266 »

Thought i'd start this topic up!
There seems to be a little bit of confusion as to what the dates are - I've heard both 15/16 Sep and 22/23 Sep...

If anyone could shed any useful light, that would be appreciated!

The event website says 15th-16th September so why the confusion? https://www.natodays.cz/

A display team that I work with seem to think it’s the week after. They may have got it wrong, thanks

To my knowledge, that date was set in stone for a while already as it's the big celebration of 100 years Czech air force.

Yes - stayed in Ostrava and had a car. (Go to the former steel works if you stay in Ostrava). Early start found it easy to get into - not so sure for later people! After a walk through the static you head for the potato field which means entering one entrance walking through the static areas and out the opposite entrance. Just follow the others with big cameras bags! Great location. The display axis is virtually at right angles to the runway so you are not going to get take off/landing shots but you do get 'just after take off shots' if you are in the potato field and the aircraft turn left (assuming they are using that runway.) If they are using the opposite runaway you get not much unless you have a very big ladder. The field is not so good for helicopter displays but great for everything else. If it's wet prepare to get muddy. There is a track around part of it - depends on how near you want to get to the perimeter. See some of the UKAR posts from previous years for diagrams.

Hi guys, resurrecting this thread! Could someone please give me some advice on doing this show from the UK? Ryanair flights are only on Thursday's, Saturday's and Tuesday's and Ideally i'd travel on a Friday and Monday as a Thursday to Tuesday is just too long really.

Any help appreciated

When I went two years ago I flew into Krakow. Ostrava is so far east in the Czech Republic it’s actually really near the Polish border; from memory I think the drive from Krakow to Ostrava only took about an hour and a half.
Posting comments on an aviation-related chatroom, are ya? Looks like it an' all...

Katowice in Poland is another possibility, that's about an hours drive.

Two seat splinter camo Viggen and the single seat Draken (not to mention the Lansen!)

Word around Radom was that part of the field at Ostrava may be being shut off.... no idea if it is just a rumour but maybe someone knows...

That would be a real shame as that’s the only decent spot to view the displays from.

Agreed. Last year we were going to do one day inside and one day in the field - that didn't really pan out the way we wanted as the weather made them cancel all fixed wing flying on Sunday. The display line at Ostrava really doesn't make much sens unless you're off base.

Attended in 2016. The coach parking/car parking area on the terminal side of the runway was a decent enough place to watch the flying from. As Agg says, the display line is odd and displays are distant from the showground.

The Americans' have announced their participation, and if I'm honest it's a little underwhelming for a so called 'Special Partner Nation'!

[fb-post]https://www.facebook.com/natodays/posts/10156525458159788[/fb-post]

For those without FB - 2x F-16, B-52, KC-135, and C-17 - all static.

It does say in the extended news section that they're also bringing over a UH-1Y Venom in the C-17, again for the static.
