The Vulcan flypasts of Beachy Head, were my aviation highlight of the last few years.

Watching it appear from cliffs below you then banking out to sea  , you just had to be there to appreciate it.

I've never been up to Beachy Head whist Airbourne has been on in the past. I think I might have to give it a go this year

Never done the Eastbourne Airshow. Luckily, a local coach company is doing a day trip...

2 seats booked. Mother can go do her OAP thing, i.e., shop and take up space in a coffee shop, while I enjoy the show..... :icecream:

You missed "Belgian" from that, as RIAT saw a Finnish example flying in 2013

I did Airbourne last year on the Saturday from Beachy. All i can say is wow, what an experience. Stood talking to the old veteran who paid for the bomber command memorial while the 2 lancs flew along. Id definitely recommend it for anyone who is thinking about it.

I'm hoping to do Airbourne this year, previous years I haven't been able to due to being somewhere else on family holidays but yippee this year I am free..... So I have a few question>
from a photography point of view would Beachy head be better than the sea front (my camera is crop sensor Canon and 100-400 zoom lens)?
Is parking easy at Beach head, is it free, whereabouts is best parking ?
For seafront I assume park and ride would be best option.
How busy does it get at Beachy head is an Early Start essential ?
Are refreshments/toilets available at Beachy Head ?
I assume the pier is still closed since the fire a couple of years ago ?

Dear Birderman,
Q1. from a photography point of view would Beachy head be better than the sea front (my camera is crop sensor Canon and 100-400 zoom lens)? .....A1. Depends what you want from your shots, for me it's 'a yes!'
Q2. Is parking easy at Beach head, is it free, whereabouts is best parking? ......A2. There is a nominal charge to park. Best place is where they tell you to park....& walk.
Q3. For seafront I assume park and ride would be best option?....... A3. Who knows? Never done it. Unless you are VIP, Disabled or get there at 0500 you won't find a parking-space anyway.
Q4. How busy does it get at Beachy head is an Early Start essential ?.......A4. Fairly busy, but it's a huge area. Best to get there early to avoid queues, but remember the early-birds on the edge are the first to get pushed-off when the grockles arrive.
Q5. Are refreshments/toilets available at Beachy Head ?...A5. Take sandwiches & drink. Take a sh*t before you get there. P*ss in your socks if you take too much drink!
Q6. I assume the pier is still closed since the fire a couple of years ago ?....A6. Who cares?
Oh! Wash your face & clean your teeth before you leave, nobody likes a skank.

I will see if I can help here.
Beachy Head is great providing aircraft come close and low enough during transit to or from their operating location, normally Shoreham. The Battle of Britain aircraft and the Red Arrows normally fly around Beachy Head during their display. The typhoon and hawk will not operate from Shoreham and therefore have not come close enough for photos previously. You are facing into the sun at the start of the display, though this gets better as the afternoon progresses but the shots people go for are looking down on the aircraft with the sea as the backdrop, so this is not so much of a problem.
Parking is limited next to the pub close by but fields are opened up nearby for extra space. Normal charge is about £5 for the day. With the Vulcan appearing on Saturday, it will be really busy but I don't think you need to be there much more than an hour before the display starts on the other days. You only need to worry about parking your car, there is plenty of room for photographers on the slopes. Your camera kit will be fine. It can get rather cold up there depending on the wind strength and direction.
There are toilets next to the car park by the pub but it can be a bit of a wait if you are a lady or have one with you. Not noticed refreshments other than ice cream vans but I always have my own food so not too sure.
Re the sea front photography. You are much closer and can shoot everything but you will be looking up rather than down, so the sun will be a problem if it is out. I've never done the sea front by car but yes it does get busy.
My advice is try Beachy Head first, if you like it, you may not want to bother with the sea front. Check out Youtube for some video footage from Beachy Head. The pier is still closed afaik.

From Airbourne's Twitter:

'Only flying Bristol Blenheim bomber in the world, Belgian NH90 helicopter & the Norwegian MiG-15 jet announced to join incredible line-up!'

Excellent additions! :yahoo:
