Cleethorpes National Armed Forces Day Airshow 2016

Post by BossMann »

The Armed Forces Day national event is heading to Cleethorpes North East Lincolnshire in 2016 - Saturday 25th June.

Each year, North East Lincolnshire hosts an Armed Forces Day but 2016 is going to be a special one. The borough is proud to host the national event, the focus of the country's attention for the day.
The full running order for the day will be released when it has been finalised, but will include:
•a formal parade through Cleethorpes
•a spectacular military show in Meridian Park
•air display (details to be confirmed)
•family focussed music and entertainment
•fantastic displays of military assets through the resort, with key villages for each of the services located around the Boating Lake area.

With the successful Military Air Day last year this event should be good, especially as I have come to be aware that the Director of the 'old' RAF Waddington Airshow is going to organise the flying display - RAF Waddington Air Show by the sea??? Full Military support is expected so this could be quite good......

No RAF Typhoon display at Cleethorpes - it will be at the Belgian Air Force Days instead. This is a great shame for the organisers that the jet won't display at the UKs national armed forces day celebrations....

I hope the organisers may manage to get some other RAF fast jets to do some flypasts instead maybe?

RAF Falcons will be displaying at Cleethorpes on the 25th June but also have the Belgian Air Force days listed on the same day so I assume they will display early in the day then go to Belgium.

Great news for Cleethorpes. However if the Falcons parachute team can do Cleethorpes & Florennes in the same day it is a shame the RAF typhoon can't!

Current line up:

RAF
Red Arrows
King Air
Falcons parachute team

Royal Navy
Black Cats team

The Army's Red Devils parachute team have Cleethorpes on the display calendar for June 25th! They displayed at Cleethorpes in 2014 and were quite good, totally different to the RAF Falcons.

The Armed Forces day website also mentions that parachute teams from all 3 services will display at the event so that suggests the Royal Navy Raiders also?

BBMF also listed on the armed forces day website but not which types.

interesting - on the display calendar it is down to display at Cleethorpes on Sunday 26th June, not part of the Saturday National Armed Forces Day event but suggesting they may have some flying on sunday too??

Like last year, not much information on the official website for the event itself which doesn't even say anything about flying displays on the sunday - just says its the family fun day!

Hi BossMann

The display details/timings have only recently been agreed. The Bronco will be displaying on the Sunday only (Saturday is military assets only), there will be other items announced for the Sunday but the planning is for a relatively small display of 5 or 6 items, once you get to 7 additional CAA fees are raised  .

Not a bad line up for the event so far, I am still hoping for the RAF Chinook display to be there ( if there is one this year ) and the Apache display with pyros over the sand (as its like southport with virtually no water when the tide goes out in the afternoon)

Previous armed forced days have had flypasts from a quartet of Typhoons (Nottingham 2013) and a Tornado 2 ship ( Guildford 2015 ), given that the RAF Typhoon is going to be supporting the Belgian Air Days rather than the UKs armed forces day hopefully the RAF will allow for some flypasts.

Can the Sea Vixen be included on the Saturday display - although not officially part of the RNHF it is owned and operated by the Fly Navy Heritage trust?

Updated Flying Displays (from various sources):

Some information finally released from the organisers of the Cleethorpes Armed Forces Day on their website regards to timings on the Saturday (I thought the Reds would have been a little later in the day as the 'finale' to the flying displays but I guess they will be flying out to Belgium hence the early appearance):

Outline (subject to confirmation):

AM: Beach activity

12 noon: Red Arrows

PM: Parade

Afternoon: Full flying displays and ground based displays - details to be confirmed

Early evening: Music and entertainment at the Armed Forces Gate

10.15pm: Fireworks

The prime minister and HRH Duke of Kent will be attending the event.

Interestingly the PM has said in the below article that 'they are doing a beach landing' - perhaps we can expect something similar to the Beach assault at the Bournemouth Air Festival?

http://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/Prime ... story.html

Sad to hear of the loss of the RAF King Air display - pretty poor RAF support for the UK's National Armed Forces Day event, I am still hoping that the RAF/ Army/ Navy will provide some more displays

See updated participation list below.

With regards to the Sunday displays I would have loved to see the Sea Vixen/ Strikemaster, Gazelle Squadron and the Blades/ Gnat Team/ Aerostars, but I guess budget has probably only allowed for aerobatic solos/ two ships and the Belgian Bronco

The Army's White Helmets Motorcycle display team are also down to display on the saturday, given that the flying display currently wont be particularly long this may be something to see after the flying finishes.

Displays so far....

I think Sunday is understandably a but sparse and it's a shame there's no solo fast jet for Saturday. I really hoped wed get a flypast from a tornado at least as the typhoon is in Belgium

Cleethorpes National Armed Forces Day 2016

Post by BossMann »

The RNHF swordfish won't be appearing, no reasons given on the event's facebook page
JHC don't seem to be happy to let the Attack helicopter display team fly over sand so the Apache won't be displaying.

They have released some preliminary timings with the Reds at 12noon as the only display with the afternoon flying display currently consisting of the BBMF and black cats only at 415pm onwards with more to be announnced.

The website also says there will be some beach activity from 11pm but not sure what this is - not sure if the beach assault is happening, as usual not much information being given by the organisers

However, on social media the events flying line up is being criticised for being a little poor, some people questioning why the RAF Typhoon display is being sent to the Belgian Air Force Air Days rather than display at the UK's National Armed Forces Day

So I think it is best to regard this event as a day out by the beach with a few spaced out flying displays thrown in, it will not be a full day military airshow with role demos and even if the RAF F35B is at RAF Fairford in time for the event, it won't be appearing I am told.

7 flying items of which 3 are parachute teams ( not all even confirmed by the organisers yet ), this could have been so much better, other seafront airshows such as Sunderland, Southport, Eastbourne, Clacton, Herne Bay and Bournemouth put this 'national event' to shame. At least there is some flying plus it the only Red Arrows display in the Lincolnshire/ Yorkshire region this year - Can't wait for Scampton next year!!!

A Long Ez solo display has been added to the Sunday display (operator unkown).

Saturday 25/06/2016

Royal Air Force
Red Arrows (9 x Hawk T1) - display time 1200*
Falcons parachute team* - display time tbc (not confirmed by organisers yet)
BBMF (Lancaster???/ Spitfire/ Hurricane)* - display time 1615
Chinook Display Team - display time tbc (not confirmed by organisers yet)

Royal Navy
Black Cats team (2 x Wildcat) - display time 1645
Raiders Parachute team - display time tbc (not confirmed by organisers yet)

Army
Red Devils Parachute team - display time 1420 from Red Devils website (not confirmed by organisers yet)

Beach Assault (not confirmed by organisers yet)

Ground displays:

Army's White Helmets Motorcycle Team - display time tbc

Fireworks - display time 2215 - organisers have not planned any 'Night Air' pyrotechnic displays such as Red Devils parachute team/ AeroSparx/ Fireflies/ Twisters etc.... so will be a stand alone fireworks display

Sunday 26/06/16

Wildcat Aerobatics (2 x Pitts)
XtremeAir XA-41
OV-10 Bronco*
Yakovlev Team (2 x Yak)
DR107
Long Ez (?? operator)

* also displaying at the Belgian Air Forces Air Days

It's Cleethorpes. Its always a shambles every year. They often dont confirm anything until the day before making it difficult to plan attending. A few years ago I turned up at the advertised starting time to find I'd pretty much missed most of it. I wonder if the typhoon is in Belgium to try to get some more sales?

Provisional flying times released for Sunday 26th June:

1300 – Wildcat Aerobatics (2 x Pitts) (Willie Cruickshank, Al Coutts)

1340 – Rutan Long-Ez (Daniel Gay)

1420 – Xtreme Air Sbach 300 (Gerald Cooper)

1500 – OV-10 Bronco (Tony de Bruyn)

1540 – DR107 (Phil Burgess)

1615 – Team Yak (2 x Yak – crews tbc)

Some people on the event's facebook page getting mixed up with the saturday and sunday displays and asking what happen to the Reds! seems like poor communication from the organisers

No flying programme released for saturday 25th yet.... we will see if they manage to add anything to what we already know, given that Arbroah managed a Typhoon flypast last weekend maybe the RAF can spare a flypast or two. Also the BBMF have problems with both the Lancaster and now Dakota so I guess it will be a Spitfire and Hurricane two ship.
