I have to say that having up to a thousand vessels of various shapes and sizes really enhances the show visually, and it would be a shame if they were all stopped from being there or pushed further out to sea.

there's normally a notice to mariners put out and they have a massive semi circle area that's kept clear. they have people on jet-skis moving any swimmers who venture into the area as well.

Yes I know, but that's got very little to do with the question I was asking about whether they'd still be allowed to be there or pushed even further back.

I can't see how the organisers can keep boats completely out of that area, but wouldn't be surprised if the no-go area is made bigger so that it stops aircraft flying directly over the boats as they often do currently.

I'm more worried about the weak line up this year rather than the boats... :tumbleweed:

i have to agree, a 4 day airshow attracting the biggest crowds, but the line up is poor, even the smaller shows like weston super mare has a cracking line up!

Air fest line up will be revealed in full at the end of the month. I hope it's worth the wait!

I would have thought so. They're at Dunsfold the following weekend so it would make sense.

Boats to be pushed further out to sea this year, and flying displays also further out.

Better have a big lens if you stand on the cliffs!

No Chinook at Bournemouth this year. That's a blow, always a good display

Is it true that the Red Arrows will be based at Bournemouth again this year?
Was very disappointing last year when they went to Exeter

Can anyone help with the best spots to go for photography of the flying aircrafts? Never been to Bournemouth so know absolutely nothing.

Any help much appreciated (should I be posting this question somewhere else on here?)

The beach is quite a good place to stand closer to the aircraft but I couldn't stand the amount of people!
The East Overcliff tends to be my best spot with good views around and down on the aircraft. In between the the piers is the center line so anywhere there you will get a good view. You do however shoot into the sun at Bournemouth but that can't be helped!
Hope this is of some help!

Except the cliffs are further back than the beaches (obviously)!
It depends on whether you want to take photos or simply kick back and watch the flying. If it's pictures you want you better have a decent lense. Other than that the cliff is definitely a good place.

Many thanks for the replies gents. I have a 500mm lens and a cropped sensor and ideally want to avoid as many people as possible  Never been so any image of a plane at Bournemouth will be a bonus, plus I've never shot into the sun skilfully so will be a test and possibly only few keepers!

Can anyone point me in the direction (politely  ) of how to get there? Is there car parking nearby?

Is this the area you are talking about? http://bournemouth.streetmapof.co.uk/east-overcliff-drive/

If you are really early, and are willing to pay quite high parking fees, there is a pay and display car park in Upper Hinton Road which is just to the west of East Overcliff Drive. Many of the other seafront car parking areas are closed as they are used for traders parking etc.

Yep that's the place .....Display center is nearer the Cumberland hotel, the best thing to do is get there early and take a walk along the beach as there is a handy florescent datum banner placed on the cliff, i prefer up top as you get or did get some great Reds syncro shots but you miss a lot of the Beach Assault action and park on Derby road

Bournemouth gets very, very busy and roads congested. I live nearish and took the train in. Train was standing room only (mid morning) and queue for shuttle bus. It is not a long walk however carrying a big lens might make it feel like that way :)

Area was grid locked with traffic so suggest you arrive early if driving into the centre. Getting out was 7 deep on the railway platform :(

Should the weather be nice (well you never know!), there will be a lot of holiday makers in the area.

Standing down on the beach area, we were like sardines !

Hmm, I normally arrive Thursday morning, and leave on Monday - not normally a traffic problem and if one is able to walk a couple of miles, then no problems at all.
