Bournemouth Air Festival 2017

Taking place on the 31st August - 3rd September 2017!
First confirmation is The Blades aerobatic team, flying on Saturday and Sunday

The Typhoon Display Team schedule is due to be released within the next few weeks. The show clashes with the Scottish Airshow, in Ayr where the Typhoon team usually display at. Either the team will do Thu & Fri at Bournemouth then Sat & Sun at Ayr or they will do one or the other, which is unlikely. The only other option is they will do 3 days at Bournemouth and travel up to Ayr on the Saturday & Sunday. Guess we'll find out in a few weeks. Lets hope we get the team for the usual 3 days!

It's only about 10 minutes from the South Coast to Scotland in a Tiffy. Ground support might have to leave a couple of hours earlier though, just in case there's traffic! :grin:

That's a fair point, there are I think 4 different engineering teams that can be set up at other locations if the jet is at more than one show a day. I guess we'll have to see what happens when the schedule's released

The amount of agonising and pondering such matters is an eye opener sometimes, they should be able to cover both, each day, without specialist engineering teams here and there, the aircraft and spare just need to operate from a single base no need to agonise over how they'll ever manage. Well they would have at one time. In the 70s, Lightning and Phantom solos would cover both Biggin Hill and Leuchars in the same afternoon. I do recall the solo Lightning at Finningley 1969, having landed after his display, refuelling and then, together with the spare, line up, engage full reheat then launch down the runway as singletons, as the second aircraft released the brakes the first was already spearing up like Saturn 5. They then made their way back to Leuchars to finish the display there. Other long stretches have included sharing items as far afield as St Mawgan and Leuchars. I know all this because I lead a very limited social life. :lol: :cuppa:

There is also the big show at Portrush that weekend that usually shares acts with Ayr.

It's sad to say, but the show has been in decline for a few years now. You could speculate what the reasons are. The cancellations of Solo Turk and the Swiss Hornet in recent years, shows that there seems to be difficulties attracting/hosting this type of display item/team.

What disappoints me is that there appears to be no desire to publicise the show from the aviation angle, other than the odd social media communication when some of the RAF schedules are published by the teams, and normally days after the original announcement. There are numerous shows around the country both RAF/military and seaside shows that have a good social media presence and are also proactive with display item announcements. Perhaps, I'm being a bit harsh, and granted that the show also prides itself on the full event with ground/sea attractions. However, there needs to be the right balance. Unfortunately, the flying display has suffered in recent years. This year, with so few display items available on the circuit, the lineup could be very poor.

The typhoon not attending is a huge blow. As much as I love the reds, they alone as the headline act is not enough

But all the evidence would suggest that yes they are..... The near million visitors to the seafront at Bournemouth will attend if the weather is good and the Reds are present. Bournemouth, like other seaside shows has seen the benefit of 2014 Lancaster duo and 2015 Vulcan farewell... now the Reds are the biggest draw across the country. Disappointing as the loss of the Swiss F18 & Solo turk were, Bournemouth still managed to attract a foreign air display last year..

Agree, from the general punters point of view that the reds are the main reason to attend. It's amazing how quickly the beach thins out once they have displayed, even when they are the first display act.

Don't get me wrong, it's my home show, and will attend just to see reds. However, for aviation enthusiasts I suspect the reds alone would not be enough reason. Bums on the beach and ice cream sales etc are the measure of success here, and so in that respect I don't expect there will be a decline this year, regardless of the flying display.

Lancaster duo didn't fly together in 2014 at Bournemouth, only the BBMF (as the Canadian one went tech)

The Belgian f16 was certainly on the cards but unfortunately wasn't logistical. The team wanted to have a nearby airport that had a cable in case of an emergency and the nearest airport would be Yeovilton. Doesn't mean other European demo teams won't be here. I would be really excited if the Rafale attended, I think it would be nice over the bay. I'm not going to bother speculating any further

Which cable-capable airfield will the Belgians require when they display at Biggin Hill?

I see that the Reds are down for Portrush on the Saturday/Sunday, so I guess that would be an early display in Bournemouth before the trip up North. Also, the Lancaster is down for Prestwick on the Saturday & Sunday, so is it likely to fly at Bournemouth on Thursday/Friday? Its a crowded weekend this year.

It does appear confusing, agreed. It isn't about the length of the runway but more due to the facilities at the respective backup airfields. If something happened to the jets' brakes, then he would be required use a cable, which Bournemouth obviously doesn't have.

I'm not 100% sure if he can't make Bournemouth due to the facilities or if it just didn't work out this year. He didn't tell me a great deal about why he isn't coming to Bournemouth. He said the only option was Yeovilton, but perhaps VLN would have been difficult to use... not sure.

It's basically for the aircraft to be brought to a stop quicker than normal. If an aircraft's brakes failed, then most pilots would 'take the cable' and thus be slowed down considerably quicker.

So is it just them ? As it ever been a consideration for Dutch or typhoon do you know ? where do they use when at Eastbourne
