Dont see why we have to wait for the poor guy to die before paying tribute. In his own words, the end is near so a good time to pay tribute to a sharp guy with a wit as dry as a South Australian chardonnay. I hope he does get to see Sydney one more time.

An amazing guy and someone with huge charm wit and strong opinions. So sad to see him suffering like he is and hope he does not need to suffer for too long. Still wish he could beat the big C though the world needs people like him.

I can do more than echo these two posts. I will miss his wit, his good humour, his dry but succinct observations on people and life in general. A man of great humanity and intellect.

Read about this earlier. Such a talented, erudite and witty broadcaster. They don't make 'em like that any more.

Used to love his "On Television" and "Postcard From" shows back in the 80s/90s.

Sad thing is, those shows would never get made today. Try getting "chubby bald bloke humourously quips over nutty foreign TV clips" past the commissioning editors...

Yes, you're so right, DanO... Today we have quality stuff like The only way is Essex, I'm a celebrity etc., etc., talent shows (a misnomer if ever I've heard one in view of the quality of most participants) and a succession of endlessly unimaginative reality shows like Big Brother...

These days, Clive James wouldn't even make it past the commissionaire let alone get to see a commissioning editor...

Worked with him a couple of years ago and he was such a gent, really nice and such great fun to work with. I echo Dan's comments, they don't make shows like his anymore

I can remember being in a far flung corner of the globe and being entertained by his three books that were collections of his column in the Observer. They were - Visions Before Midnight, The Crystal Bucket and Glued to the Box. Most of the programmes were still fresh in the mind and his views sometimes resulted in those embarrassing "laugh alone" moments. His annual review of the Formula one season was also a memory that lingers, even after all these years. Along with Rolf Harris and Barry Humphries he remains one of Australia's greatest exports.
