I bet the beneficiaries of his estate will be happy bunnies!

Ba dum tish!

Joking aside it will be interesting to see what amount of estate he does leave - didn't he do one of those deals where he sold his house to an investor on the understanding he could continue to live there? So was he skint or was it just a clever tax dodge?

Probably some truth in it unfortunately - reports circulating of him being taken to hospital in full cardiac arrest.

For those of us of a certain age, we are watching our pop/rock heritage crumble away. Its hard to put into words the enjoyment I get from the pop/rock art form and this is another great loss.

That's interesting. My mothers cousin was a pilot on 106, during the time that Guy Gibson was in charge.

That's also interesting. I remember long ago speaking to someone who had been aircrew (can't remember what trade, not pilot) who had also been there during Gibson's tenure and he reckoned many were glad to see him go, because of his habit of volunteering them for sticky missions!

Quite some years ago we were lucky enough to meet up with John Elson, who had been Derrick Brinkhurst's (my mothers cousin) flight engineer, and we obviously asked him about Guy Gibson, and he told us that yes, he could be a hard taskmaster, but that in the pub he was 'just one of the boys'.

Derrick was shot down in December 1942 by Heinz Wolfgang Schnaufer after bombing Munich as described in in Peter Hinchliffe's book 'Schnaufer, Ace of Diamonds', which is well worth a read if you can find it. Derrick was killed, but four of his crew managed to bail out safely (allbeit at very low level by that time) including John Elson of course, and they all became POW's. John told us that Derrick could have also bailed out, but that he stayed at the controls in order that his crew had the best possible chance to survive. Obviously, we are intensely proud of him.
