Help me choose my favourite film

Postby CJS on Fri 18 Aug 2017, 7:04 pm

Been helping sort out my parents' loft and came across a box of war films I had when I were a lad. So come on UKAR, which should be my favourite? I can't decide but for sentimental reasons have plumped for the masterpiece that is The Great Escape. At 38, 35 and 33 years old, me and my brothers still watch this each Christmas as we did when we were kids.

What would you choose from this little bunch?

Funny that, when I looked at the choices my first reaction was the same.
From whats on offer I would go for BoB or The Great Escape.

The Great Escape. As near to perfect as a war film was ever likely to get. Stellar cast, iconic soundtrack and while not an accurate minute by minute account of the escape it portrays the feel of the events perfectly with a real emotional rollercoaster with the differing fates and fortunes of the escapees. Certainly left a lasting impression on me.

A man after my own heart! However you do know that the majority of the defenders at Rorke's Drift were not Welsh.

All are great war films. Battle of Britain, The Great Escape, The Dambusters, 633 Squadron and Memphis Belle all have superb soundtracks and personally I could watch them all over and over again. The Great Escape is probably the very best although my personal favourite is probably 633 Squadron purely because of the Mosquitoes.

Think I would probably go for Battle of Britain because it was a genuine attempt to represent the history fairly to both sides (and the beat-up of the Hurricanes in France by the Buchons is awesome) while still allowing some dramatic licence, but as a lifelong Mosquito nut it has to be 633 Squadron.

For me, the missing man is The Cruel Sea.
