Nelson Must Fall!

The problem is that although you keep referring to the Aboriginal Australians being there for thousands of years ( actually tens of thousands, I think the last estimate is somewhere around 70,000 ) there are other Countries & regions whose 'indigenous' / 'native' people haven't been there for very long, often less than 1000 & in some cases only a few hundred years.
Sometimes they populated empty islands/regions, other times they killed off the people already living there, yet they are now classed as 'indigenous'/'native'.

Some of the current non-Aboriginal Australians have ancestors who settled there over 150 years ( so upwards of 6 generations ) ago, so technically should qualify as being 'native'.

As for claiming it's a trait of 'Western' culture....no more so than it is in Russia, China, Japan & any number of other non-Western Countries.
In fact, when it comes to Western culture the opposite is true -- the failings of the past have been accepted for some time now....in fact, it could be argued that in the case of Britain we've gone too far the other way with our Government apologising for events which happened hundreds of years ago.

People who continually harp on about how badly Britain treated people in Countries it colonised or bring up the slave trade seem to conveniently ignore the treatment of British people at the time, hence why you can't look back at historical events from a modern perspective.

If you want to argue cultural failings, go to Africa & North Africa and try and get the former to admit to the extent of their involvement in the slave trade ( or even to any involvement ) or to get the latter to apologise for the slave trade that they were ( and in some areas still are ) involved in.

It really bugs me when these lefties try and judge historical figures by today's standards. Churchill was an big imperialist so shall we remove any mention of him from street names, statues etc. Same with Queen Victoria, shall we rename Victoria station, and Waterloo for that matter! These people need to find more to do with their lives.

One question. Does Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square commemorate Nelson's victory over the French at the Battle of Trafalgar or does it depict Nelson flogging a black slave and glorify his battles to keep slavery ?

If it's to glorify his despicable treatment of slaves, it should be torn down tomorrow. If it's to glorify his defeat of the French, then even if he had slaves, in a time that slavery was legal and he campaigned against making slavery, which was legal, illegal, the monument is not about his views on slavery, but his victory over the French.
Disclaimer-I have spell/grammar checked this post, it may still contain mistakes that might cause offence.

He was like a lot of Captains & Admirals at that time and tried to use flogging as a punishment as little as possible, despite the fact that AIs at the time stipulated that it was the only punishment ( other than execution ) Captains could order for the majority of offences.
