excellent, excellent, excellent. How did you manage to get no people in such a popular event. Did Cheltenham turn up?

Great stuff!

Some of those are great - esp. the b/w ones.

Surely "The Flying Scotsman" should be no 4472 - whats going on there?

Nice to see the 'Duchess of Hamilton' in the sunshine. Beautiful engine.

Hi,
Just to fill you in, Flying Scotsman is currently wearing LNER Wartime Black and during that time it carried the numbers 502 and shortly after 103 (the photos all show 502 but it currently carries 103 on it's other cab side). In 1948 after nationalisation, as with most LNER engines, this number was increased by 60000 giving 60103 which it carried until it's retirement in 1963. I could be wrong (someone please correct me if I’m wrong), but I don't think it ever carried the number 4472 or wore the LNER Apple Green after it was upgraded to an A3 from it's earlier A1 configuration. As it's preserved as an A3, the only one to survive in preservation, it would make most sense for it carry 60103 and one of it's BR colours but the plan is to put it into it's LNER Apple Green and 4472 guise once they finally get it running again.
Hope this helps and gives some background to the numbering,

Thanks for the info - that got me looking at Wikipedia, which says regarding numbering:

"1472, renumbered 4472, renumbered 502, renumbered 103, renumbered 60103"

Built 1923 as an A1: Number 1472
1924: Named and numbered 4472
1934: Became the first steam locomotive to be officially recorded at 100 mph (as 4472)
Jan 1946: Renumbered 502
May 1946: Renumbered 103
1947: Converted to A3
1948: Renumberd 60103 (Nationalisation)
1963: Retired from BR

Lovely set, and I thought it nice to see Scotsman in its wartime guise, but given the number of people who walked past it or just looked confused on seeing the nameplate, I suspect retaining the black long term would be very controversial. Apparently it's caused a bit of a furore already in some quarters.

I was suprised and displeased when I first heard what they'd done but having seen the first pics, read up on the number history and now seen the beast in the flesh as it were, I'm now very much a convert. I think it's a very bold move and to be applauded; a bit of extra interest and a little controversy every now and again is a good thing for all.

Is Duchess of Hamilton rail legal/boiler certified/mainline ready with that cowling added.
Would love to see her giving it full pelt.

Hi,
Duchess of Hamilton is not currently a runner, and hasn’t steamed since 1996. With Duchess of Sutherland a regular mainline runner the NRM was, I believe, not prioritising putting her back in steam, favouring engine types that aren’t currently running. Some bright spark however realised that funding an external restoration to streamlined condition would be popular and make it easier to get funding to restore her to mainline running condition again. Sure enough as soon as she was unveiled the question on everyone’s lips was when will she run! Last I read on the subject funding was in progress not only to get Duchess of Hamilton back in steam but also with a rake of matching coaches, which would look amazing. That was a few months back though, probably before they had to throw even more money at Flying Scotsman! Let’s hope Duchess of Hamilton is in better condition.
Hope this helps,
Mark
